What maintenance fitter work involves
01What the work is
The maintenance fitter is the mechanical half of a plant’s maintenance team, and the trade many ITI fitters grow into. The work is taking machines apart and putting them back better: pulling and fitting bearings, changing mechanical seals on pumps, overhauling gearboxes, renewing keys, sprockets and chains, fitting and tensioning belts, and aligning motors to the machines they drive so that couplings and bearings last. It also uses the hand skills of the fitter trade, filing, drilling, tapping, reaming and fitting parts to size, together with reading assembly drawings and parts lists. People search for it as an ITI fitter job, a mechanical maintenance job or a machine fitter job.
02A shift, start to finish
Breakdowns set the pace of a fitter’s shift. A gearbox starts to howl, a pump loses pressure, a press bearing runs hot: you listen, feel for heat and vibration, check the oil, and decide with the in-charge whether it can wait for the weekend or must come apart now. Repairs follow a careful order: isolate and lock out, drain, mark the parts, dismantle, clean, measure wear against the drawing, replace, reassemble to torque, align with dial gauges, run in and check again. Planned work fills the rest of the shift: PM tasks, preparing spares, and small improvements that stop the same failure coming back.

What you do on maintenance fitter shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Bearings and seals
Pull, heat and fit bearings correctly, and change pump mechanical seals without damaging the faces.
- 02
Gearbox overhauls
Strip, clean, measure and rebuild gearboxes, setting backlash and end play to the manual.
- 03
Shaft alignment
Align motors to pumps, fans and gearboxes with dial gauges or a laser kit.
- 04
Belts, chains and couplings
Fit and tension V-belts and chains, and renew coupling elements and sprockets.
- 05
Fitting by hand
File, drill, tap and ream to make or fit parts and brackets to size.
- 06
Record the job
Note what failed, the wear you measured and the parts used, so repeat failures show up.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Dial indicator and magnetic base
- Shaft alignment, run-out and end-play checks.
- Laser shaft alignment kit
- Faster, more exact alignment, where the plant has one.
- Bearing puller and induction heater
- Remove and fit bearings without hammering them.
- Torque wrench
- Tightens bolts in the right sequence to the right value.
- Micrometer, vernier caliper and feeler gauges
- Measure wear, fits and clearances.
- Chain pulley block and slings
- Lift motors and gearboxes safely in and out of place.
- Files, taps, dies and reamers
- The hand tools of the fitter trade.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Isolate before you openLock out the drive and drain or depressurise before you remove a guard or a cover.
- Lift it, do not carry itUse the chain block or crane with checked slings, and never stand under a raised load.
- Pinch pointsCouplings, belts and gears trap fingers: guards stay on until the drive is locked out, and go back on after.
- Hot parts and oilGearbox oil and induction-heated bearings burn: let them cool, or use heat-resistant gloves.
Maintenance fitter levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Supports a senior fitter: cleans and marks parts, fetches spares and helps strip simple assemblies.
- L2Skilled
Changes bearings, belts, chains and coupling elements on familiar machines, with a senior checking the result.
- L3Proficient
Strips and rebuilds pumps and small gearboxes and aligns couplings with dial gauges alone.
- L4Expert
Leads non-routine overhauls, finds the root cause of repeat failures and guides helpers; the NSQF qualification Fitter - Mechanical Maintenance (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other fitters, checks their overhauls and helps the plant plan major repairs.
How your level rises
#1502 Mechanical Maintenance Fitter starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
