What mechanical fitter work involves
01What the work is
Fitting is the classic ITI trade: making parts go together properly. A mechanical fitter reads assembly drawings, marks out on the surface plate, files and scrapes surfaces to fit, drills, reams and taps holes, cuts keyways by hand, fits keys and dowels, presses and heats bearings onto shafts, assembles gearboxes, pumps and conveyors, and aligns shafts and couplings so machines run smoothly. In fabrication, fitters set up and assemble frames and machine bases; in new plants, they install and erect equipment. Fitting differs from maintenance fitting, #1502, mainly in that it builds and installs rather than keeps running machines.
02A shift, start to finish
A fitting shift usually starts with the drawing, the parts list and the tools. You check parts for burrs, damage and the right sizes, clean every mating surface, and assemble in the order the drawing or work instruction gives. Bearings are fitted with the right puller, press or heater, never a hammer on the races; seals go in the right way round; bolts are tightened in sequence to the torque on the sheet. Shafts are aligned with a dial indicator or straight edge and feeler gauges, and moving parts are turned by hand to check they run free before any power trial. Each assembly gets its checklist ticked and signed.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1207 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can list it on a shift with a minimum level, higher for alignment and gearbox work than for simple bench fitting. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1207 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.
What you do on mechanical fitter shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Read the assembly drawing
Read the drawing and parts list and lay out parts in assembly order.
- 02
Mark, file and fit
Mark out, file, scrape and drill so parts fit as the drawing asks.
- 03
Fit bearings and seals
Fit bearings with a press, puller or heater and seals the right way round.
- 04
Align shafts
Align shafts and couplings with a dial indicator or straight edge and feelers.
- 05
Torque in sequence
Tighten bolts in the right sequence to the torque on the sheet.
- 06
Check and sign
Turn moving parts by hand, run the trial and sign the assembly checklist.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Bench vice, files and scrapers
- For fitting parts by hand.
- Surface plate and height gauge
- For marking out and checking.
- Drills, reamers and taps
- For holes and threads.
- Bearing puller and induction heater
- Fit and remove bearings without damage.
- Torque wrench
- Tightens bolts to the specified torque.
- Dial indicator and feeler gauges
- For shaft alignment and clearances.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Lock out before fittingWork on installed machines only after they are locked out and tagged.
- Lift with gearUse slings, hoists and chain blocks for heavy parts, and keep clear of the load.
- Eyes when drillingWear safety glasses when drilling, hammering or using compressed air.
- Pinch pointsKeep fingers out of gaps when lowering parts onto shafts and frames.
Mechanical fitter levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Does bench fitting, drilling and tapping and assists in assembly.
- L2Skilled
Assembles sub-units from drawings with bearings, seals and torque done right.
- L3Proficient
Aligns shafts and couplings and assembles gearboxes and pumps without help.
- L4Expert
Installs and erects machines and leads assembly work on larger equipment.
- L5Master
A fitter plants trust with their most precise assemblies and installations, with a long #1207 record.
How your level rises
#1207 Mechanical Fitter starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
