What structural fitter and rigger work involves
01What the work is
Structural fitting works from general arrangement and fabrication drawings. The fitter marks out plates and sections, sets them up on the floor or on stands, checks levels, plumb and diagonals, and tacks them for the welder, building columns, beams, trusses, staircases, platforms and machine bases. On site, structures are erected piece by piece, aligned and bolted with torqued high-strength bolts. Rigging is the skill of moving heavy things safely: choosing slings, shackles and chain blocks with enough safe working load, finding the centre of gravity, planning the lift, signalling the crane operator, and shifting machines on skates and jacks into position.
02A shift, start to finish
A structural or rigging shift starts with a toolbox talk and the plan: what is being fitted or lifted, its weight, the lifting gear, the route and who signals. You inspect every sling, shackle and hook for damage and tags, set up barricades so nobody stands under the load, and use tag lines to control swinging. Fit-up is done with tape, level, plumb and squares, tacks placed so the welder can work, and bolts tightened to the sequence. Work at height means a harness tied off at all times. At the end, lifting gear is cleaned, checked and stored, never left lying on site.
