What a maintenance technician does

Maintenance technicians keep a plant’s machines and utilities running. The work splits between planned jobs and breakdowns. Planned work follows the preventive maintenance schedule: lubrication rounds, belt and bearing changes, filter cleaning and checks on guards and couplings. Breakdowns are the other half: fast, careful fault finding when a machine stops in the middle of a shift and a line is waiting.

Mechanical maintenance fitters strip and rebuild gearboxes, pumps and couplings and align shafts. Hydraulics and pneumatics technicians trace leaks, change seals and hoses and set pressures. Utility technicians run and service compressors, chillers and cooling towers, and HVAC and refrigeration technicians look after air-conditioning and cold rooms. Machine setters handle changeovers between products, conveyor technicians keep material moving, and tool-and-die maintenance keeps press tools and moulds in shape.

Shutdown and preventive work is often planned for weekends and holidays, when lines stop, so maintenance shifts can suit people who want work on their days off.

Safety and PPE

Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear, like safety shoes or PPE, and the hard parts, like heavy lifting or night work, so read it before you book.

  • Lock out first Isolate and lock out power, air and hydraulics before you open a machine.
  • Stored energy Springs, accumulators and trapped air can move parts with the power off: release them first.
  • Work at height Overhead conveyors and ducts need a harness; #2006 Work-at-Height Certified is a certificate SuperGig verifies.
  • Eyes and hands Safety glasses, and the right gloves for oil, sharp edges and hot parts.

How a skill levels up

  1. L1Starter
  2. L2Skilled
  3. L3Proficient
  4. L4Expert
  5. L5Master

Every skill starts at L1 when you add it. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record. Three things move a skill up:

  • Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
  • Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
  • How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.

The app shows what each skill’s next level needs.

The skill check

A shift can list skills and one minimum level for all of them. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted. A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

Licences, Certifications & Compliance

Skills from this category of the app that go with the work.

  • #2013 TPM (Total Productive Maintenance)
  • #2006 Work-at-Height CertifiedSuperGig verifies
  • #2007 Confined Space CertifiedSuperGig verifies
  • #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies

Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them. Keep the original ready: SuperGig support will call you and check it.

TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) is a practice, not personal certificate: you add it like any other skill.

Where a standard fits, the app maps each skill to NCO-2015, NSQF, ISCO-08 and ESCO. #1502 Mechanical Maintenance Fitter, for example, maps to NCO-2015 7233.0101, “Maintenance Fitter - Mechanical”.

Hiring for a plant?Pre-book SuperGig Plant

Which maintenance skills can I add in SuperGig Partner?
Nine: Maintenance Technician (General), Mechanical Maintenance Fitter, Utility / Compressor & Chiller Technician, Hydraulics & Pneumatics Technician, Tool & Die Maintenance, HVAC / Refrigeration Technician, Machine Setter / Changeover Technician, TPM / Lubrication Technician and Conveyor / Material-Handling Maintenance.
Do maintenance shifts need a licence?
No skill in Maintenance & Mechanical waits for a licence in the app, so each one starts at L1 when you add it. A shift may also list a certificate such as #2006 Work-at-Height Certified, #2007 Confined Space Certified or #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified, and those count only once SuperGig verifies them.
Is TPM a certificate in the app?
No. #2013 TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) sits with the licences and certificates, but it is a practice, not a personal certificate, so you add it like any other skill. #1508 TPM / Lubrication Technician is the hands-on maintenance skill.
Can I report a machine fault I find during a shift?
Yes, where the plant allows it. On a live shift, report the breakdown from the app, and the plant sees it marked as reported by a Partner on shift.
Can I choose weekend or night maintenance shifts only?
Yes. In My Availability you set the days and the time-of-day slots you want to work, and on the map you can filter shifts by day and time of day. Each shift shows its hours and pay before you book.
What is the difference between a maintenance fitter and a machine setter?
A maintenance fitter, #1502 Mechanical Maintenance Fitter in the app, repairs and rebuilds machines when they wear or break: bearings, gearboxes, pumps and couplings. A machine setter, #1507 Machine Setter / Changeover Technician, changes a machine over from one product to the next and sets tools, dies and parameters so the first parts come out right. A shift can list both skills when it needs both kinds of work.
Are there full-time, part-time, night or weekend maintenance shifts?
When plants post them, yes. Each plant sets the days and hours of its own shifts, and posts them as one-day shifts, weekly repeats, multi-day runs of 1 to 31 days and hourly slots of 1 to 8 hours. You choose which ones to book, so you can work day by day, fill a whole week, or take nights or weekends. See full-time shift work, part-time shifts, night shift jobs and weekend shift jobs.
