What welders and fabricators do in a plant

Welders join metal parts into frames, brackets, tanks, enclosures and machine bases; fabricators cut, bend and fit those parts before the welder gets them. In a plant, the process decides the job. MIG is the workhorse of production welding. TIG gives clean, controlled joints on thin sheet and stainless steel. Arc or stick welding handles thicker sections and repair work, and spot welding joins sheet-metal panels on a line, often with a gun or a robot cell.

A welding shift usually starts with the drawing or the welding instruction: the joint, the wire or rod, the current and the order of welds. You set the machine, fit and tack the parts in the fixture, weld in sequence to keep distortion down, then chip the slag, clean the spatter and look over every bead before the part moves on. Fitters and riggers line up heavy parts, and laser, plasma and press-brake operators cut and bend sheet before it reaches the welding bay.

Welding is hot work, so plants take permits, screens and fire watch seriously. #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified is a certificate skill in the app, and it counts only once SuperGig verifies it.

Safety and PPE

Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear, like safety shoes or PPE, and the hard parts, like heavy lifting or night work, so read it before you book.

  • Helmet and screens A helmet with the right shade, and screens round the bay, protect your eyes and everyone nearby.
  • Gloves and jacket Leather gauntlets, a welding jacket or apron and closed shoes stop burns from spatter.
  • Fumes Weld where the fume extraction works, and keep your head out of the plume.
  • Hot-work rules Follow the plant’s hot-work permit, keep an extinguisher near and clear anything that can burn.

How a skill levels up

  1. L1Starter
  2. L2Skilled
  3. L3Proficient
  4. L4Expert
  5. L5Master

Every skill starts at L1 when you add it. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record. Three things move a skill up:

  • Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
  • Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
  • How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.

The app shows what each skill’s next level needs.

The skill check

A shift can list skills and one minimum level for all of them. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted. A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

Licences, Certifications & Compliance

Skills from this category of the app that go with the work.

  • #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
  • #2006 Work-at-Height CertifiedSuperGig verifies
  • #2007 Confined Space CertifiedSuperGig verifies

Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them. Keep the original ready: SuperGig support will call you and check it.

Where a standard fits, the app maps each skill to NCO-2015, NSQF, ISCO-08 and ESCO. #1203 TIG Welder, for example, maps to NCO-2015 7212.0105, “Tungsten Inert Gas Welder”.

Hiring for a plant?Pre-book SuperGig Plant

Which welding and fabrication skills can I add?
Thirteen: Welder (General), MIG Welder, TIG Welder, Arc / Stick Welder, Gas Cutter, Sheet-Metal Fabricator, Mechanical Fitter, Spot / Resistance Welder, Robotic Welding Operator, Brazing Operator, Structural Fitter / Rigger, Laser / Plasma Cutting Operator and Press Brake / Bending Operator. A shift can list more than one, and you need every listed skill at the level the shift asks for.
Do I need a welding certificate to book welding shifts?
Not as a rule. The app has no welding licence, so welding skills start at L1 when you add them and rise as plants approve your shifts in them. A shift may also list a certificate such as #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified, which counts only once SuperGig verifies it. Keep the original ready: SuperGig support will call you and check it.
Is a fabricator the same as a welder in SuperGig Partner?
No. #1206 Sheet-Metal Fabricator, #1207 Mechanical Fitter, #1211 Structural Fitter / Rigger and #1213 Press Brake / Bending Operator are skills of their own, separate from the welding processes. Add each one you can do, so shifts that list them are open to you.
What protective gear do welding shifts need?
Plants set their own rules, and each shift’s details list what to bring or wear. Welding generally calls for a helmet with the right shade, leather gloves, a jacket or apron and safety shoes, and hot work follows the plant’s permit.
How does a welder move up from L1?
With approved shifts in the skill: every approved shift that listed #1202 MIG Welder when it was posted counts towards your next MIG Welder level. Arriving on time, as SuperGig verifies it, and how plants rate your work count too. Levels go from L1 (Starter) to L5 (Master), and the app shows what the next one needs.
Are there full-time, part-time, night or weekend welding shifts?
When plants post them, yes. Each plant sets the days and hours of its own shifts, and posts them as one-day shifts, weekly repeats, multi-day runs of 1 to 31 days and hourly slots of 1 to 8 hours. You choose which ones to book, so you can work day by day, fill a whole week, or take nights or weekends. See full-time shift work, part-time shifts, night shift jobs and weekend shift jobs.
