What a CNC operator does on a shift

A CNC operator runs computer-controlled machines that cut metal to tight sizes: CNC lathes and turning centres, vertical machining centres (VMCs), grinders and EDM machines. A shift starts at the machine with the setter or the operator before you: which program is loaded, which offsets changed and how the last parts measured. Then you load raw parts or castings into the fixture, run the cycle and check the first part against the drawing before the batch goes on.

The skill is in the details. You listen for chatter, watch tool wear and coolant flow, measure parts with a vernier, micrometer or bore gauge at the interval on the inspection sheet, and change worn inserts when the setter says so. When a size starts to drift, a good operator stops the machine and calls the setter instead of sending bad parts down the line.

Programming, setting and tool-room work are separate skills in the app: #1102 CNC Programmer (VMC/HMC), #1109 Tool & Die Maker and #1110 CAD / CAM Draughtsman. A shift lists the skills it needs, so you can see whether a plant wants an operator or a programmer before you book.

Safety and PPE

Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear, like safety shoes or PPE, and the hard parts, like heavy lifting or night work, so read it before you book.

  • Eye protection Chips and coolant spray fly: keep safety glasses on and the door shut while the machine cuts.
  • Care with gloves Gloves can catch on a turning chuck or spindle; follow the plant’s rule on when to wear them.
  • Safety shoes Castings, fixtures and chucks are heavy; closed safety shoes protect your feet.
  • Nothing loose Roll up sleeves and tie back hair before you work near a chuck or spindle.

10 CNC & Machining skills you can add

Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.

  • #1101 CNC Operator
  • #1102 CNC Programmer (VMC/HMC)
  • #1103 CNC Turning Operator
  • #1104 CNC Milling / VMC Operator
  • #1105 Grinding Machine Operator
  • #1106 EDM / Wire-Cut Operator
  • #1107 Drilling / Tapping / SPM Operator
  • #1108 Honing / Lapping / Broaching Operator
  • #1109 Tool & Die Maker
  • #1110 CAD / CAM Draughtsman

How a skill levels up

  1. L1Starter
  2. L2Skilled
  3. L3Proficient
  4. L4Expert
  5. L5Master

Every skill starts at L1 when you add it. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record. Three things move a skill up:

  • Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
  • Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
  • How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.

The app shows what each skill’s next level needs.

The skill check

A shift can list skills and one minimum level for all of them. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted. A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

Licences, Certifications & Compliance

Skills from this category of the app that go with the work.

  • #2011 5S
  • #2013 TPM (Total Productive Maintenance)
  • #2014 ISO 9001 / IATF 16949

5S, TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) and ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 are practices, not personal certificates: you add them like any other skill.

Where a standard fits, the app maps each skill to NCO-2015, NSQF, ISCO-08 and ESCO. #1101 CNC Operator, for example, maps to NCO-2015 7223.5002, “CNC Operator - Machining Technician”.

What is the difference between a CNC operator and a CNC programmer in the app?
They are separate skills. #1101 CNC Operator runs the machine on a program that is already proved; #1102 CNC Programmer (VMC/HMC) writes and edits programs. A shift lists the skills it needs and one minimum level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
Which CNC and machining skills can I add?
Ten: CNC Operator, CNC Programmer (VMC/HMC), CNC Turning Operator, CNC Milling / VMC Operator, Grinding Machine Operator, EDM / Wire-Cut Operator, Drilling / Tapping / SPM Operator, Honing / Lapping / Broaching Operator, Tool & Die Maker and CAD / CAM Draughtsman. Add the ones you can do. Each starts at L1 and climbs as plants approve your shifts in it.
I have run CNC lathes for years. Why do I start at L1?
Every skill starts at L1 (Starter) when you add it, because only SuperGig sets a level, from your record on SuperGig. Approved shifts in the skill, arriving on time and how plants rate your work move it up towards L5 (Master), and the app shows what your next level needs.
What should I take to a CNC shift?
Read the shift’s details before you book. They list the duties, the hours and what to bring or wear, such as safety shoes. At the gate, show your WorkPass: a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds, or its QR code.
Where can I find CNC shifts near Hosur or Bengaluru?
In the SuperGig Partner app. SuperGig works in 14 industrial hubs on the Hosur–Bengaluru corridor: SIPCOT Phase 1, SIPCOT Phase 2 and Hosur Town in Hosur, and Electronic City, Bommasandra, Jigani, Attibele, Hoskote, Whitefield, Peenya, Nelamangala, Dabaspet, Doddaballapura and Bidadi around Bengaluru. When plants there post CNC shifts, they show on the map in the app. See jobs in Hosur and jobs in Bengaluru.
Are there full-time, part-time, night or weekend CNC operator shifts?
When plants post them, yes. Each plant sets the days and hours of its own shifts, and posts them as one-day shifts, weekly repeats, multi-day runs of 1 to 31 days and hourly slots of 1 to 8 hours. You choose which ones to book, so you can work day by day, fill a whole week, or take nights or weekends. See full-time shift work, part-time shifts, night shift jobs and weekend shift jobs.
