What arc and stick welder work involves
01What the work is
Manual metal arc welding needs only a power source, cables, an electrode holder and electrodes, which is why it is used for structural steel, site work, maintenance and repairs where gas cylinders and wire feeders are impractical. The flux coating on the electrode melts to shield the weld and leaves slag on top, which is chipped off between passes. Common electrodes are general-purpose rutile types for easy welding and low-hydrogen types for stronger, crack-resistant structural welds, which must be kept dry in an electrode oven. Thick joints are bevelled and filled in several passes.
02A shift, start to finish
A stick welding shift starts with the set: cables without cuts, a firm earth clamp close to the job, the holder insulated, and electrodes of the right type and size, dry from the oven if they are low-hydrogen. You set the current for the electrode and position, strike the arc and hold a short, steady arc length, and run each pass at an even speed, chipping and brushing the slag before the next. On structures you weld in vertical and overhead positions, often at height on a platform, and check for slag inclusions, undercut, porosity and cracks. Electrode stubs go into a bin, never on the floor.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1204 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post arc welding shifts with a minimum level, perhaps higher for structural and positional welding. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1204 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.
What you do on arc and stick welder shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Check cables and earth
Check cables, holder and earth clamp, and clamp the earth close to the joint.
- 02
Keep electrodes dry
Take low-hydrogen electrodes from the oven as needed and keep them dry.
- 03
Set the current
Set the current for the electrode size and welding position.
- 04
Run the passes
Strike, hold a short arc and run each pass at an even speed.
- 05
Chip and brush slag
Remove slag fully between passes so none is trapped in the weld.
- 06
Check the weld
Look for slag inclusions, undercut, porosity and cracks, and fix them.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Arc welding transformer or inverter
- Supplies welding current for stick electrodes.
- Electrode holder and earth clamp
- Carry the current to the electrode and back from the job.
- Electrode oven
- Keeps low-hydrogen electrodes dry.
- Chipping hammer and wire brush
- Remove slag between passes.
- Angle grinder
- Bevels joints and grinds out defects.
- Welding screens
- Protect nearby workers from the arc.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Shock in wet placesStick welding in damp areas can shock: keep gloves dry and stand on dry boards.
- Work at heightUse a harness tied off on platforms and structures, as the plant requires.
- Arc and slagUse the helmet for welding and clear glasses for chipping: slag flies.
- Fire watchSparks travel far on site: clear flammables and keep an extinguisher close.
Arc and stick welder levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Welds simple joints in the flat position with general-purpose electrodes.
- L2Skilled
Runs sound multi-pass welds and handles low-hydrogen electrodes correctly.
- L3Proficient
Welds vertical and overhead on structures with clean slag removal.
- L4Expert
Takes structural, repair and site jobs without supervision.
- L5Master
A stick welder plants trust with critical structural joints, with a long #1204 record.
How your level rises
#1204 Arc / Stick Welder starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

- #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
- #2006 Work-at-Height CertifiedSuperGig verifies
No licence is needed to add #1204. Site and structural welding often comes with hot work permits and work at height: #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified and #2006 Work-at-Height Certified count once SuperGig has verified them.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
