What gas cutter work involves
01What the work is
Oxy-fuel cutting works on carbon steel: a preheat flame of oxygen with acetylene or LPG brings the steel to its ignition temperature, then a jet of pure oxygen burns a narrow cut, the kerf, through it. It cuts thick plate that other processes struggle with, needs no electricity, and is used to cut plates to size, bevel edges for welding, cut beams and channels, cut holes on site, dismantle old structures and size scrap. A track-mounted cutting machine gives straight, square or bevelled cuts; by hand, a guide or template keeps the line. Stainless steel and aluminium need plasma instead.
02A shift, start to finish
A gas cutting shift begins with the equipment: cylinders upright and chained, regulators set to the right pressures, hoses free of cracks, and flashback arrestors fitted at the regulators and the torch. You light the torch with a spark lighter, never a match, set a neutral preheat flame, and check the nozzle size for the plate thickness. Cuts are marked with soapstone or a scriber, made at a steady speed so the kerf is clean, and the dross knocked off the bottom edge. A fire watch is kept for falling sparks, and at the end the cylinder valves are closed and the hoses bled.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1205 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post cutting shifts with a minimum level, for example higher for machine bevelling and profile cutting than for scrap sizing. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1205 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.

How your level rises
#1205 Gas Cutter starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
