What laser and plasma cutting operator work involves
01What the work is
CNC cutting has taken over much of the sheet and plate work that used to be sheared, punched or gas-cut. A fibre laser focuses a beam through a nozzle with an assist gas, oxygen for mild steel or nitrogen for clean stainless and aluminium edges, and cuts brackets, panels, gaskets and profiles with fine detail and almost no burr. CNC plasma tables cut thicker plate faster and at lower cost, with consumables, the electrode and nozzle, that wear and are changed. Both machines run nesting programs that arrange many parts on one sheet to save material, prepared by a CAD/CAM or nesting programmer.
02A shift, start to finish
A cutting shift starts with the machine checks: nozzle condition and centring, the protective window or lens, assist gas pressure, the slats of the cutting table, and the extraction. You load the sheet on the shuttle table, confirm its grade and thickness match the program, set the origin, and start the cut, watching the first pierces and the edge quality: dross, burr, striations and bevel tell you when a nozzle is worn or the focus is off. Cut parts are knocked out of the skeleton, sorted by job and checked against the drawing, and the skeleton goes to scrap. Plasma consumables and laser nozzles are changed on schedule.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1212 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post cutting shifts with a minimum level, for example asking for a higher level for stainless and thin-sheet work where edge quality matters. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1212 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.
What you do on laser and plasma cutting operator shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Check nozzle and optics
Check nozzle condition and centring, the protective window and the assist gas.
- 02
Load the sheet
Load the sheet on the shuttle table and confirm grade and thickness against the program.
- 03
Run the nest
Set the origin and run the nesting program, watching the first pierces.
- 04
Watch edge quality
Read dross, burr, striations and bevel to spot a worn nozzle or wrong focus.
- 05
Remove and sort parts
Knock parts out of the skeleton, sort them by job and check them against the drawing.
- 06
Change consumables
Change plasma electrodes and nozzles or laser nozzles on schedule.

Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Laser beamIndustrial lasers can blind: never open covers or bypass interlocks on a running laser.
- Fumes and dustKeep the extraction running; cutting fumes and dust are harmful.
- Sharp parts and skeletonsCut parts and skeletons have razor edges: wear cut-resistant gloves.
- Plasma arcPlasma gives off strong UV and high voltage: use the right shade and keep the torch lead undamaged.
Laser and plasma cutting operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Loads sheets, runs proven nests and removes and sorts parts under guidance.
- L2Skilled
Runs a laser or plasma through the shift, checks edges and changes consumables.
- L3Proficient
Handles stainless, aluminium and thin sheet with good edges and spots focus problems.
- L4Expert
Runs both laser and plasma, edits simple nests and keeps machines productive.
- L5Master
A cutting operator plants trust with their most demanding material and parts, with a long #1212 record.
How your level rises
#1212 Laser / Plasma Cutting Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
