What press brake and bending operator work involves
01What the work is
A press brake bends sheet between a punch on the moving beam and a V-die on the bed; the depth the punch goes into the die sets the angle. CNC press brakes position the back gauge for each bend and store the program, including the bend sequence, which matters because a flange bent too early can hit the tool or the machine on a later bend. The operator sets up the tools, often in segments, chooses the die opening for the thickness, allows for springback, the way metal opens up slightly after bending, and makes sure the flat blank is placed the right way round every time. Tube and pipe bending machines bend round sections to a radius.
02A shift, start to finish
On a bending shift you check the program and the tool set-up sheet, fit and clamp the punches and dies, and bend a first part from scrap or the first blank, measuring angles with a protractor or angle gauge and flange lengths with a vernier. The first part is approved before the batch. Then you bend in sequence, supporting large sheets with a partner or the machine’s supports so they do not whip as they bend, and check parts at the set frequency. Angle drifting from one end to the other may mean crowning needs adjusting; you report it rather than forcing it. Tools are cleaned and racked at the end.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1213 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post bending shifts with a minimum level, higher for complex enclosures and stainless than for simple brackets. Approved #1213 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings build the record SuperGig raises your level from.

Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Hands out of the toolKeep fingers away from the punch and die; hold the sheet at its edges.
- Guards onNever switch off or bypass the light guard or the front safety device.
- Sheet whipLarge sheets swing up fast during a bend: stand clear of the flange.
- Tool changes locked outChange punches and dies only with the machine stopped and locked out.

Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.

Bends simple brackets on a set machine and checks angles, under guidance.
- L2Skilled
Sets standard tools, runs programs and keeps angles in tolerance through the shift.
- L3Proficient
Handles multi-bend parts and enclosures, allowing for springback without help.
- L4Expert
Sets up new jobs, chooses tooling and works in stainless and thick plate.
- L5Master
A press brake operator plants trust with their most complex parts, with a long #1213 record.
How your level rises
#1213 Press Brake / Bending Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
