What scrap and waste yard work involves
01What the work is
Every plant produces scrap and waste, and much of it has value or carries risk. Metal scrap is sorted by type: steel turnings and chips, sheet offcuts, cast iron, aluminium, copper and brass, each kept apart because mixed scrap sells for less. Cardboard, plastics, wooden pallets and packing waste go to their own bays. Hazardous waste, such as used oil, oily cloths, paint sludge and chemical containers, is stored separately in a covered, marked area and leaves only with an authorised collector. The yard handler keeps all of it sorted, weighed, recorded and ready for collection.
02A shift, start to finish
A yard shift starts by collecting bins from the shop floor on a pallet truck or trolley and bringing them to the yard. You empty each one into its bay, pick out anything in the wrong stream, and weigh what goes out on the platform scale, writing it in the scrap register. When a buyer’s or collector’s vehicle arrives, you load it, weigh it again with security present and make sure the gate pass matches. In between, you keep the bays within their limits, sweep up chips and spilt oil, and return clean, empty bins to the lines.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
In the app this is #1908 Scrap / Waste Yard Handler, under Facility, Housekeeping & Safety. NCO-2015 lists no occupation for refuse sorting and there is no NSQF qualification, so the app links the skill to ISCO-08 group 9612 and ESCO’s recycling worker. No licence is needed, and the skill begins at L1 when you add it. Moving loaded scrap bins with a forklift is #1701 Forklift Operator, which waits for a verified #2001 Forklift Licence.

How your level rises
#1908 Scrap / Waste Yard Handler starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
