What forklift operator work involves
01What the work is
A forklift operator keeps material moving through a plant. You take raw material off incoming trucks, carry pallets to the stores or straight to the line, bring finished goods to the dock and load them for dispatch. Most plants run counterbalance forklifts: diesel ones in the yard, battery-electric ones indoors, and some on LPG. The work is careful driving more than lifting: judging a load against the capacity plate, picking it up square and level, and setting it down exactly where the stores team wants it, without touching a rack, a wall or a person.
02A shift, start to finish
A forklift shift starts before the key turns, with the pre-use check: tyres, forks and chains, hydraulic leaks, brakes, horn, lights, the reverse alarm, and the battery charge or the fuel. Then comes the plan for the shift: which trucks are due, which pallets go to which bay and which lanes are closed. Through the shift you work to the dock schedule and the line’s calls, travel with the forks low and the mast tilted back, and give way at every crossing. At the end you park in the marked bay with the forks on the floor, put a battery truck on charge and write any fault in the logbook.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
In the app this is #1701 Forklift Operator, in Logistics, Warehouse & Material Handling. Its NCO-2015 code is 8344.0201 (Fork Lift Truck Operator/Fork Lift Operator/Driver), and the national Forklift Operator/Driver qualification that matches it sits at NSQF level 3. You can add #1701 at any time, but it gets its first level, L1, only after SuperGig has verified your #2001 Forklift Licence. From there SuperGig raises it from your own record: forklift shifts that plants approved, punctual arrivals and how plants rated you.
What you do on forklift operator shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Pre-use truck check
Walk round the truck: forks, chains, tyres, leaks, brakes, horn, lights and seat belt, and report any fault before you drive.
- 02
Unload incoming trucks
Lift pallets off the truck bed or out of a container and set them down in the receiving area for counting.
- 03
Feed the stores and the line
Carry pallets to their rack locations or to the line-side area at a steady, safe speed.
- 04
Stack and de-stack
Place pallets in racking or block stacks, square and level, within what the truck may lift at that height.
- 05
Load for dispatch
Load finished goods in the order the dispatch plan sets, so the right pallets come off first at the customer.
- 06
Park, charge and log
Park with the forks lowered and the brake on, put a battery truck on charge, and note the hours and any faults.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Counterbalance forklift
- The everyday plant forklift, diesel, battery-electric or LPG, with its counterweight at the back.
- Capacity plate and load chart
- Shows the most the truck may lift at each load centre and height; every lift is checked against it.
- Side shifter
- Slides the forks left or right so a pallet lines up without shunting the truck.
- Wooden and plastic pallets
- The base every load travels on; a cracked or broken pallet is set aside, not lifted.
- Dock plate and wheel chocks
- Bridge the gap to a truck bed and stop the truck rolling while you drive on and off.
- Daily checklist and logbook
- Where the pre-use check, running hours, charging and faults are written down for maintenance.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Forks low when movingTravel with the forks just off the floor and the mast tilted back; raise a load only at the rack.
- See where you goIf the load blocks your view, drive in reverse, and sound the horn at blind corners and doorways.
- No riders, nobody underNever carry a passenger or lift a person on the forks, and keep everyone clear of a raised load.
- Loads uphill on rampsWith a load, drive up a ramp forwards and down it in reverse, so the load always stays uphill.
Forklift operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
With your licence verified, you make simple pallet moves on a level floor while a supervisor watches.
- L2Skilled
You load and unload trucks and work the receiving and dispatch areas on routine, planned moves.
- L3Proficient
You stack to the top racks and handle a busy dock on your own, and refuse an unsafe load before lifting it.
- L4Expert
You take heavy, long or awkward loads, plan the moves for a shift and keep the loaders around you safe.
- L5Master
You coach newer drivers, check their driving and help the plant improve how material moves.
How your level rises
Your #1701 Forklift Operator skill starts at L1 once SuperGig has verified your #2001 Forklift Licence. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for forklift operator work
Licences and certificates
L1 waits for a verified #2001 Forklift LicenceAdd the licence in the app, tap “Ask SuperGig to verify” and keep the original ready: SuperGig support will call you and check it against your verified Aadhaar. Only SuperGig can verify a licence or certificate.
One verified #2001 Forklift Licence opens both this skill and #1707 Reach Truck / Stacker Operator, so add both if you also drive reach trucks or stackers.
