What factory housekeeping work involves
01What the work is
Housekeeping in a factory is more than sweeping. Oil and coolant on a shop floor cause falls, chips and dust get into products, clutter in front of exits turns a small fire into a big one, and dirty washrooms spread illness. A housekeeping attendant cleans to a schedule: floors swept and scrubbed, machine surroundings degreased, bins emptied and waste segregated by colour, washrooms cleaned and restocked, offices dusted. Many plants run 5S, so you also help keep every area sorted and labelled. In cleanrooms the rules are stricter, with special wipes and gowning.
02A shift, start to finish
A shift usually starts at the housekeeping store: collect the trolley, mops, cloths and the day’s diluted chemicals, and check the area checklist. Washrooms and entrances come first, before most people arrive; then come shop-floor rounds between production breaks, cleaning around running lines without getting in the way. You put up wet-floor signs, clean one half of an aisle at a time and tick each area on the checklist. Before leaving, you wash the mops, return the chemicals and report anything broken, leaking or unsafe.

- Sign every wet floorPut up the wet-floor sign before you mop, and leave a dry path for people to pass.
- One chemical at a timeMixing products such as bleach and acid cleaners can give off a toxic gas.
- Gloves, mask, gogglesWear the gloves and eye protection the label asks for, and a mask for dusty jobs.
- Away from moving machinesNever clean inside a running machine; ask the operator to stop it first.
