What general welder work involves
01What the work is
#1201 Welder (General) is the catalogue’s all-round welding skill, for welders who move between processes and jobs rather than specialising in one machine. A day may start with tacking up a material-handling trolley with a MIG torch, move to stick welding a bracket onto a structural beam, and end with repairing a cracked guard. The welder reads the fabrication drawing and the weld symbols that say what kind of weld goes where, how big and on which side, prepares and fits the parts, controls distortion with the right sequence, and finishes and checks the welds. Specialist skills, such as #1202 MIG, #1203 TIG and #1204 arc welding, sit beside it in the app.
02A shift, start to finish
A welding shift starts with the machine and the area: cables and earth clamp in good condition, gas cylinders chained and leak-free, the hot work permit in place where the plant needs one, flammables moved away and a fire extinguisher at hand. Parts are cleaned of paint, oil and rust at the joint, fitted with clamps and magnets, checked for squareness and gaps, and tacked. Then the welds are laid in the planned sequence to keep the job from pulling out of shape, slag is chipped, and each weld is checked for undercut, porosity, cracks, size and profile. Spatter is cleaned, and finished work is ground where the drawing asks.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1201 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post welding shifts with a minimum level, from simple tack and fillet work to structural welding in position, and they can list the PPE to bring. Approved #1201 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings build the record SuperGig raises your level from.

How your level rises
#1201 Welder (General) starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
