What tool and die maintenance work involves
01What the work is
Every stamped bracket and moulded part is only as good as the tool that made it. Press tools, blanking, piercing, bending, drawing and progressive dies, wear with every stroke: punch and die edges dull and parts start to show burrs, springs tire, pilots and strippers wear, guide pillars and bushes loosen. Moulds clog at their vents, scale up in their cooling channels and wear at the ejector pins and parting lines, and parts start to show flash or short shots. Tool and die maintenance fixes this between runs, in the tool room or the die clinic, so the next batch comes out right. It is different from building new tools, which is the job of the #1109 Tool & Die Maker.
02A shift, start to finish
A typical shift starts with the tools that came off the presses or moulding machines, each with its last-part sample and a note from production. You check the last part for burrs, size and marks, open the tool on the bench, clean it and find the worn element. A dull punch is ground on the surface grinder and the die shimmed back to its height; a broken spring or pilot is replaced from the spares; a mould gets its vents cleaned, its ejectors freed and its cooling lines flushed. After reassembly the tool is tried out, the first parts are checked with the quality team, and the tool’s history card gets the stroke or shot count and what was done.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1505 sits in Maintenance & Mechanical and is mapped to NCO-2015 7223.0200 Tool Setter, Press, at NSQF level 3.5; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification Automotive Tool Room Technician (NSQF 3.5) is written at about L4 Expert. It has no licence gate, so it starts at L1 when you add it, and your level rises from the tool room shifts plants approve. Shifts often pair it with #1507 Machine Setter / Changeover Technician, because the person who maintains a die often helps set it.

How your level rises
#1505 Tool & Die Maintenance starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for tool and die maintenance work
Licences and certificates
- #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
#1505 starts at L1 when you add it: no licence gate. Die work inside a press starts with a lockout, so shifts can list #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified. If the job includes driving the EOT crane yourself, the plant may also list #1705 Crane / Hoist Operator, which waits for a verified #2002 Crane Operator Licence.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
