What machine setter and changeover work involves
01What the work is
Plants run many part numbers on the same machines, so every few hours a machine must change over: a new die in the press, a new mould in the injection moulding machine, new fixtures and tools on a CNC or a special-purpose machine, new format parts on a packing line. A machine setter makes that change and sets the machine up: clamps the tool, sets shut height, stroke, feeds, speeds, temperatures and pressures from the setup sheet, runs the first parts, gets the first-off approved by quality, and hands a stable machine to the operator. Good setters make changeovers fast and right first time, which is what plants mean by SMED, the single-minute exchange of die.
02A shift, start to finish
A setter’s shift follows the production plan. Before a changeover, while the machine is still running the last batch, you prepare everything you can: the next tool on its trolley, clamps, bolts, gauges and the setup sheet. When the batch ends you stop and lock out the machine, swap the tool, set it, and run the first parts at slow speed or in setting mode. The first-off goes to the inspector; if a dimension is out, you adjust and run again until it is approved. Then you hand over to the operator, note the changeover time and any problem with the tool, and start preparing the next one.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1507 sits in Maintenance & Mechanical and is mapped to NCO-2015 7223.0100 Tool Setter, General; the app’s standards list no NSQF qualification for it. It has no licence gate, so it starts at L1 when you add it and rises from the setter shifts plants approve for you. Setters usually also run the machines they set, so add the machine skills you know as well, such as #1002 Injection Moulding Operator, #1003 Power Press / Stamping Operator or #1101 CNC Operator.
What you do on machine setter and changeover shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.

- 02
Change the tool
Lock out, unclamp, swap the die, mould or fixture, and clamp the new one correctly.
- 03
Set the parameters
Set shut height, stroke, feeds, speeds, temperatures and pressures from the setup sheet.
- 04
First-off approval
Run the first parts, measure them, and get quality to approve them before production.
- 05
Hand over
Hand a stable machine to the operator and say what to watch for.
- 06
Record the changeover
Note the time it took and any tool problem, so the next changeover is faster.

- Lock out to changeIsolate and lock the machine before your hands go into the tool area.
- Setting mode, slow speedRun the first strokes or cycles in setting mode, with everyone clear of the tool.
- Heavy toolsUse the crane or trolley for dies and moulds, and never stand under a lifted tool.
- Hot mouldsMoulds and nozzles stay hot long after a run: wear heat-resistant gloves.

- L2Skilled
Does routine changeovers on one type of machine from the setup sheet, with a senior checking before first-off.
- L3Proficient
Changes over and sets familiar machines alone and gets the first-off approved.
- L4Expert
Sets up new parts and trials, solves setting problems, cuts changeover time and guides operators.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other setters, checks their setups and helps the plant improve its setup sheets.
How your level rises
#1507 Machine Setter / Changeover Technician starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

- #2012 Kaizen / Continuous ImprovementPractice
