An injection moulding operator runs the machines that melt plastic granules and shoot them into a steel mould, then takes out the parts, trims them and checks them for defects such as short shots, flash and sink marks. What injection moulding operator work involves
01What the work is
Injection moulding makes the plastic parts in cars, two-wheelers, switches, appliances and connectors. Granules such as polypropylene, ABS, nylon or polycarbonate are dried first when the material needs it, melted by the heated barrel and screw, and injected at high pressure into a mould held shut by the machine’s clamping force. After the hold and cooling time the mould opens and the part is ejected, either into a chute, onto a conveyor, into the hands of the operator or onto a robot’s gripper. The process settings belong to the setter or process engineer; the operator keeps the cycle running and the parts right.
02A shift, start to finish
On a moulding shift you take over a running machine, read the job card and the standard pack quantity, and check the first parts against the master sample. Then the rhythm is part removal, de-gating the runner, trimming any flash with a deburring blade and packing to the count, with a close look at every few shots for short fills, sink marks, silver streaks, burn marks or warping. Runners usually go to a granulator for regrind if the plant allows it. When defects repeat, you tell the setter rather than touching the barrel temperatures or pressures, and you note the shot counter and rejects before hand-over.

Confirm the right granule grade and colour masterbatch is in the hopper and, for materials that need it, the dryer is on.

Take parts out when the robot or chute does not, keeping the cycle time steady.

De-gate and trim flash
Cut the gate cleanly and trim flash with a deburring blade without marking the part.

Spot moulding defects
Look for short shots, sink marks, silver streaks, burns, flash and warping, and set rejects aside.

Pack to the standard
Pack the standard quantity per box or tray with the right label and part number.

Log shots and rejects
Write the shot counter, rejects and any stoppage on the job card for the next shift.

- Noise and fumesUse ear plugs near large presses and step back from fumes when the setter purges the barrel.
