What extrusion and blow moulding operator work involves
01What the work is
Extrusion is a continuous process. A screw turning inside a heated barrel melts plastic and pushes it through a die; downstream, a sizing tank, cooling bath, haul-off and cutter or winder turn the hot shape into pipe, conduit, profile, sheet or film. Blow moulding makes hollow parts. In extrusion blow moulding a tube of hot plastic, the parison, is closed inside a mould and blown out with air to make cans, jerry cans and containers; in stretch blow moulding, PET preforms are reheated, stretched with a rod and blown into bottles for water, drinks and household products. Operators keep these lines fed, watched and in specification.
02A shift, start to finish
Because extrusion lines and bottle blowers run non-stop, a shift begins with a careful hand-over: the recipe, line speed, temperatures and any open problems. You keep the hopper fed with resin and colour masterbatch in the right ratio, watch the melt and haul-off readings, and take samples on schedule: diameter and wall thickness on pipe, gauge on film, and weight, neck finish and wall distribution on bottles. Containers go through leak testing, and rejects are counted and kept apart. When the product drifts out of tolerance, you tell the shift in-charge before changing anything, and you never reach into a running haul-off or cutter.
