What general machine operator work involves
01What the work is
#1001 Machine Operator (General) is the catalogue’s all-round operator skill. It is for the person a supervisor can put on most everyday machines after a short briefing, rather than a specialist in one process such as moulding or die casting. On one shift that can mean a pneumatic riveting press, on the next a pillar drill, a pipe-cutting saw, a crimping machine or a semi-automatic sealing machine. The job is the same each time: feed the machine correctly, keep it at the rate the line needs, and notice early when the parts coming off stop matching the master sample.
02A shift, start to finish
A shift starts with the hand-over from the previous operator and the start-up checklist: oil and air pressure, guards in place, the emergency stop tested, the first part signed off by the line inspector. Then come the cycles: load, run, unload, stack in the right bin, mark the count. Every hour or so you check a part with the gauge you are given and clear chips or offcuts from the work area. If the machine jams, makes a new noise or starts throwing bad parts, you stop it and call the setter instead of opening the tooling yourself. The shift ends with a clean machine, a filled job card and a short briefing for the next operator.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
Plants book by skill number and level, so #1001 is worth adding even if you also hold a specialist machine skill. It starts at L1. A plant may post a shift at L1 when it will brief you at the machine, or ask for a higher level when it wants someone who can run without supervision from the first hour. Each approved shift in #1001, each verified on-time arrival and each plant rating adds to your record, and SuperGig raises your level from that record.

- Go/no-go gauges
- Fixed gauges that pass or reject a hole, thread or diameter in seconds.
- Vernier caliper
- For a quick size check when the work instruction asks for one.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Two-hand means two handsNever tape, wedge or bypass a two-hand button or a light curtain to go faster.
- Nothing loose near spindlesSleeves buttoned, no gloves near a rotating drill, and hair tied back or covered.
- Safety shoes all shiftDropped blanks and bins cause many floor injuries, so closed safety shoes stay on.
- Tooling is the setter’s jobClearing a jam inside the tool is done by the setter, with the machine locked out.
General machine operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.

- L2Skilled

- L3Proficient
Moves between machines on a line without supervision and catches a drifting part before it becomes a reject.
- L4Expert
Trusted on any standard machine in the section, helps with simple changeovers and briefs new operators.
- L5Master
The operator a plant puts on its hardest machine of the day, backed by a long record of approved #1001 shifts.
How your level rises
#1001 Machine Operator (General) starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

- #2011 5SPractice
