What drilling, tapping and SPM operator work involves
01What the work is
Almost every machined part has holes: bolt holes, oil passages, threaded holes for mounting, dowel holes that must be exactly placed. Radial drills, with their swinging arm, drill heavy castings and fabrications; pillar drills handle smaller parts in jigs; tapping arms and tapping machines cut threads quickly and square. Special purpose machines, SPMs, are built for one part family: several spindles drill, ream, chamfer and tap a housing at once, with the part held in a fixture fitted with sensors that stop a wrong or missing load. Holes are held to size and position by jigs, bushes and the machine itself.
02A shift, start to finish
On a drilling or SPM shift you check the fixture is clean, the sensors and clamps work, and the drills and taps in the spindles are the right sizes and in good condition. You load the part, clamp it, run the cycle and unload, deburring holes where the instruction says. Every few parts you check holes with plug gauges, threads with thread plug gauges, and depths and positions with the gauges at the station. A broken tap or drill means stop: the part is set aside and the setter decides how to remove it. Tool changes are counted and logged so tools are replaced before they break.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1107 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. SPM and drilling shifts can be a good step after helper or general operator work, and plants can post them at L1 or ask for a higher level for jig drilling of large castings. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1107 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.
What you do on drilling, tapping and SPM operator shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Check fixture and sensors
Clean the fixture and confirm clamps and part-present sensors work before loading.
- 02
Load and clamp
Seat the part on its locators and clamp it; never hold work by hand.
- 03
Drill, ream and tap
Run the cycle or drill to the jig, with the right feed and coolant.
- 04
Gauge holes and threads
Check holes with plug gauges and threads with thread plug gauges at the set frequency.
- 05
Broken tool, stop
Stop at once for a broken drill or tap, set the part aside and call the setter.
- 06
Count tool life
Log parts per tool and change drills and taps at the set count.

Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- No gloves at the spindleA glove caught by a drill pulls your hand in: keep gloves away from rotating tools.
- Clamp, never holdAlways clamp the work: a drill that grabs spins an unclamped part.
- Eyes coveredWear safety glasses: chips and broken taps fly.
- Clear chips safelyClear chips with a brush or hook with the spindle stopped.

- L2Skilled
Runs a station through the shift, keeps tool counts and handles thread checks.
- L3Proficient
Drills and taps with jigs on radial and pillar drills and catches position errors early.
- L4Expert
Moves across SPMs and drills, does simple tool changes and supports the setter.
- L5Master
An operator plants trust on any drilling or SPM station, with a long #1107 record.
How your level rises
#1107 Drilling / Tapping / SPM Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
