What honing, lapping and broaching operator work involves
01What the work is
Honing finishes bores. Abrasive stones on an expanding tool rotate and stroke up and down inside the bore, bringing it to size within a few microns, making it round and straight, and leaving the cross-hatch pattern that holds oil in cylinder liners, connecting rods, gear bores and hydraulic cylinders. Lapping rubs a part against a flat plate with fine abrasive to get faces flatter than any grinder can, for seals, valve plates and gauges, checked with an optical flat under monochromatic light. Broaching pushes or pulls a long toothed tool, the broach, through or over a part so each tooth cuts a little more, making keyways, splines and odd internal shapes in one pass.
02A shift, start to finish
On a honing shift you set the honing tool and stones for the bore, set the stroke length and the size control, and check the first parts with an air gauge or bore gauge for size, taper and roundness, and look at the cross-hatch angle. Stones are dressed or changed as they wear, and honing oil is kept clean. Lapping work means loading parts in the carriers, timing the cycle and checking flatness. On the broaching machine you load the part in its fixture, run the stroke, clean chips from the broach teeth, and check keyway width and depth or spline fit with gauges. Each job has its own records of sizes and tool counts.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1108 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Because these processes finish parts at the end of a long machining route, plants may ask for a higher minimum level on honing and lapping shifts. Approved #1108 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings build the record SuperGig uses to raise your level.

- 01
Set the honing tool
Fit the right stones, set stroke length and size control for the bore.
- 02
Check bore size and shape
Check size, taper and roundness with an air gauge or bore gauge, and look at the cross-hatch.
- 03
Lap to flatness
Load parts in carriers, time the lapping cycle and check flatness with an optical flat.
- 04
Broach keyways and splines
Load the part in the broach fixture, run the stroke and clean the broach teeth.
- 05
Gauge the features
Check keyway width and depth or spline fit with the gauges at the machine.
- 06
Record sizes and tool life
Write sizes, stone changes and broach counts on the job record.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Vertical and horizontal honing machines
- Finish bores with expanding abrasive stones.
- Honing tools and stones
- Sized to each bore and changed as they wear.
- Lapping machine and plates
- Lap faces flat with fine abrasive compound.
- Broaching machine and broaches
- Cut keyways, splines and internal forms in one stroke.
- Air gauge
- Reads bore size, taper and roundness quickly.
- Optical flat and monochromatic light
- Show flatness as light bands on lapped faces.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Broaches are heavy and sharpHandle broaches with care and store them on racks, never loose on a bench.
- Fingers clear of strokesKeep hands out of the stroke path of honing and broaching machines.
- Oil mistHoning oil mist builds up: keep extraction on and wash your hands and arms.
- Abrasive slurryLapping slurry is slippery and abrasive: keep it off the floor and your skin.
Honing, lapping and broaching operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Loads parts and runs a set honing, lapping or broaching cycle under guidance.
- L2Skilled
Checks size and finish with air gauges and optical flats and keeps clean records.
- L3Proficient
Sets stones and stroke, corrects taper and roundness, and keeps the process stable.
- L4Expert
Sets up new jobs across honing, lapping and broaching and helps others measure right.
- L5Master
A finishing operator plants trust with their most precise bores and faces, with a long #1108 record.
How your level rises
#1108 Honing / Lapping / Broaching Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
