Also calledCNC lathe operator, turning centre operator,CNC turner,TC operator,CNC lathe machine operator, slant bed lathe operator
A CNC turning operator runs computer-controlled lathes, or turning centres, that turn shafts, pins, flanges, bushes and hubs from bar or forgings, measuring diameters and threads and keeping inserts and offsets right through the batch. In SuperGig Partner this is skill #1103: add it after KYC and book the turning shifts that machine shops and plants in Hosur and Bengaluru post, with the pay shown before you book.

What CNC turning operator work involves
01What the work is
Turning centres do what a centre lathe does, under program control and much faster. The part spins in a hydraulic chuck, often with soft jaws bored to fit it, or in a collet fed by a bar feeder, while tools on the turret face, turn, groove, thread and bore it. Machines with driven tools can also drill cross-holes and mill flats, and twin-spindle machines finish the back of the part in the same cycle. Typical parts are axle shafts, gear blanks, valve parts, pins, bushes, hydraulic fittings and pulley hubs, held to tight diameters, lengths and surface finish.
02A shift, start to finish
On a turning shift you check the chuck pressure and jaws, the bar feeder or loading method, and that the right program and tools are in place. The first part is measured completely: outside diameters with micrometers, bores with a bore gauge, lengths and steps with a vernier or height gauge, threads with ring and plug gauges, and finish where the drawing asks. During the batch you watch for stringy chips wrapping around the part, change or index inserts when the finish or size starts to slip, and adjust X and Z wear offsets within the limits the setter gives you, checking the next part each time. Readings go on the inspection sheet at the set frequency.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1103 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can list it on a shift with a minimum level, for example asking for a higher level when they need someone to handle frequent insert changes and tight bores alone. Approved #1103 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings build the record SuperGig raises your level from.
What you do on CNC turning operator shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Check chuck and jaws
Check chuck pressure and soft jaws, and that the bar or blank seats correctly.
- 02
Measure the first part
Measure diameters, bores, lengths and threads fully before the batch runs.
- 03
Run the batch
Load, cycle and unload steadily, watching chips and coolant.
- 04
Wear offsets
Adjust X and Z wear offsets within the allowed limits as sizes drift.
- 05
Index and change inserts
Index or change inserts when finish or size slips, then re-check the next part.
- 06
Record readings
Write readings on the inspection sheet at the frequency the plan sets.
Machines, instruments and tools
- CNC turning centre
- Two-axis lathes, some with driven tools or a second spindle.
- Bar feeder
- Feeds bar stock into the spindle for unattended runs.
- Soft jaws and collets
- Hold the part accurately without marking it.
- Turning inserts and boring bars
- Carbide inserts for turning, grooving, threading and boring.
- Outside micrometer and bore gauge
- Measure diameters and bores to the drawing.
- Thread ring and plug gauges
- Check external and internal threads.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Guard closedKeep the door closed during the cycle: a part thrown from a chuck is deadly.
- Bar stock sticking outLong bar stock behind the spindle must be guarded or supported by the bar feeder.
- Stringy chipsLong chips cut deep: stop the machine and clear them with a hook, never by hand.
- Eye protectionWear safety glasses when you open the door, blow parts or clean the chuck.
CNC turning operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Loads and unloads, runs a proven program and checks parts with set gauges.
- L2Skilled
Measures fully with micrometers and bore gauges and keeps the inspection sheet right.
- L3Proficient
Adjusts wear offsets and changes inserts on their own and holds tight tolerances.
- L4Expert
Handles bar-fed and driven-tool machines and supports set-ups and first-offs.
- L5Master
A turning operator plants trust with their tightest jobs on any turning centre, with a long #1103 record.
How your level rises
#1103 CNC Turning Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
