What lathe operator and turner work involves
01What the work is
The centre lathe is the oldest machine in most workshops and still one of the most useful. The job is held in a three-jaw or four-jaw chuck, or between centres, and a single-point tool on the carriage cuts it as it spins. A turner faces the ends, turns diameters and steps, cuts tapers with the compound slide, bores holes, cuts threads by engaging the lead screw, knurls grips and parts off finished pieces. Plants keep conventional lathes for repair parts, spacers, bushes, one-off fixtures and small batches where writing a CNC program would take longer than doing the job by hand.
02A shift, start to finish
A lathe shift starts with the drawing: material, sizes, tolerances and the order of operations. You set the job true in the chuck, using a dial indicator for a four-jaw, set the tool exactly at centre height, and choose a speed and feed for the material. Roughing cuts take the bulk off; finishing cuts bring the size in, measured with an outside micrometer, vernier or bore gauge, and threads are checked with a thread gauge or the mating part. You keep the tools sharp on the bench grinder, clear chips with a hook rather than your hand, and leave the machine wiped down and the chuck key out of the chuck.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1005 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. A plant can ask for a minimum level on a shift, so a repair job with tight fits may ask for more than simple facing and cutting work. SuperGig raises your level from your record of approved #1005 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.

Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.

Turns steps and tapers, bores holes and measures confidently with micrometers.
- L3Proficient
Cuts threads, holds tighter fits and sets jobs true in a four-jaw chuck.
- L4Expert
Takes on repair parts and fits from a drawing or a worn sample without help.
- L5Master
The turner a plant trusts with its hardest one-off jobs, with a long #1005 record.
How your level rises
#1005 Conventional Lathe Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
