What grinding machine operator work involves
01What the work is
Grinding comes last in many machining routes, after turning, milling and heat treatment, because only an abrasive wheel can bring a hardened part to its final size and finish. Surface grinders hold flat parts on a magnetic chuck and grind faces flat and parallel, as on die plates and gauge blocks. Cylindrical grinders grind diameters between centres or in a chuck, outside or inside, for shafts, spindles and bearing seats. Centreless grinders support pins, rollers and valve stems on a work rest between two wheels and grind them in a continuous stream. Size is held to a few microns, and surface finish is measured as a roughness value.
02A shift, start to finish
A grinding shift starts with the wheel: checking it is the right specification and speed rating, ring-testing a new wheel before mounting, balancing it, and dressing it true with a diamond. You set the job, on the magnetic chuck, between centres or on the work rest, take a skim to find the high spots, then grind with light passes and plenty of coolant, sparking out at the end for size and finish. Every few parts are measured with micrometers, comparators or air gauges; you watch for grinding burns, chatter marks, taper and out-of-roundness, and you never force a cut to make up time. The machine, coolant tank and magnetic chuck are left clean.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1105 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post grinding shifts with a minimum level, perhaps higher for tight-tolerance cylindrical or centreless work than for simple surface grinding. Approved #1105 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings build your record, and SuperGig raises your level from it.
What you do on grinding machine operator shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.

- 02
Set the job
Hold the part on the magnetic chuck, between centres or on the work rest, correctly located.
- 03
Grind with light passes
Grind with light cuts and coolant, sparking out for size and finish.
- 04
Measure in microns
Check size with micrometers, comparators or air gauges at the set frequency.
- 05
Watch for burns and chatter
Look for burn marks, chatter, taper and out-of-roundness, and stop if they appear.
- 06
Record and clean
Record readings, clean the chuck and coolant tank, and hand over.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Surface grinder
- Grinds flat faces with the part on a magnetic chuck.
- Cylindrical grinder
- Grinds outside and inside diameters between centres or in a chuck.
- Centreless grinder
- Grinds pins, rollers and stems continuously on a work rest.
- Diamond dresser
- Trues and sharpens the wheel face.
- Air gauge or comparator
- Reads size to a micron quickly at the machine.
- Surface roughness tester
- Measures the finish the drawing asks for.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Wheel checksUse wheels rated for the spindle speed, ring-test new ones and keep the guard on.
- Stand aside at startStand to the side when you start a wheel, in case it is cracked.
- Eyes and faceWear safety glasses or a face shield: grinding throws hot abrasive and metal.
- Coolant mistKeep extraction on and report a strong coolant smell or mist.
Grinding machine operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Grinds simple flat parts on a surface grinder with set wheels, under guidance.
- L2Skilled
Dresses wheels, grinds to drawing sizes and measures with micrometers and comparators.
- L3Proficient
Runs cylindrical or centreless grinding to micron tolerances and spots burns and chatter.
- L4Expert
Sets up new jobs on several grinder types and helps others hold finish and size.
- L5Master
A grinder operator plants trust with their tightest, hardest parts, with a long #1105 record.
How your level rises
#1105 Grinding Machine Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
