What VMC operator work involves
01What the work is
A vertical machining centre holds the part on its table and brings a spinning tool down on it from above. Tools wait in a magazine and the automatic tool changer swaps them in seconds, so one program can face a surface, mill pockets and profiles, drill and tap holes and finish-bore critical diameters. Typical VMC parts are pump and gearbox housings, brackets, manifolds, flanges, die plates and fixture parts. A horizontal machining centre, the HMC, turns the spindle sideways and adds pallets and a rotary table so several faces are machined in one clamping, which is why HMC operation sits in the same skill.
02A shift, start to finish
On a VMC shift you clean the table and fixture locators, clamp the part against its datums with the right torque, and confirm the program, tools and work offset, such as G54, are the ones on the set-up sheet. The first part is checked fully: bore sizes with a bore gauge, depths with a depth micrometer, positions with a height gauge or on the CMM, and threads with plug gauges. While the batch runs you deburr and measure the previous part, watch for chatter, poor finish and blunt tools, replace worn end mills and drills, and correct tool wear offsets only within the limits you are given. Chips are cleared from fixtures before every load.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1104 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can list #1104 on a shift with a minimum level, for example asking for a higher level when the job involves frequent tool changes or 4th-axis work. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1104 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.

How your level rises
#1104 CNC Milling / VMC Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
