A CMM operator measures machined and fabricated parts on a coordinate measuring machine, a touch probe on a precise granite-based frame, by aligning the part on its datums, running the measuring program and reporting sizes, positions and geometric tolerances. In SuperGig Partner this is skill #1305: add it after KYC and book the CMM shifts plants and measurement rooms in Hosur and Bengaluru post, with the pay shown before you book.

What CMM operator work involves
01What the work is
A coordinate measuring machine records points on a part with a probe and calculates features from them: the diameter and position of a bore, the flatness of a face, the angle between two surfaces, the profile of a curve. That makes it the instrument plants rely on for first-article inspection, new-part approvals and complex parts that hand instruments cannot measure, such as engine and gearbox housings, brackets, dies and moulds. CMMs sit in temperature-controlled rooms, usually at 20 °C, because steel grows with heat. Results are reported against the drawing’s dimensions and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, GD&T.
02A shift, start to finish
A CMM shift starts with the machine: air supply, a clean granite table, and probe qualification, where each stylus is calibrated on the reference sphere. Parts are cleaned and left to reach room temperature before measuring, then fixtured so they do not move. You align the part to its datums, as the drawing defines them, run the part program or measure features manually with the joystick, and check the report for points out of tolerance or measurements that look wrong. Reports are saved and printed in the plant’s format, failures are flagged to quality and production, and the probe is parked safely before the machine is left.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1305 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can list #1305 on a shift with a minimum level, perhaps asking for more when the operator must write or edit programs. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1305 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.
What you do on CMM operator shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Let parts reach room temperature
Clean parts and let them soak in the CMM room before measuring.
- 02
Qualify the probe
Calibrate each stylus on the reference sphere before the first measurement.
- 03
Fixture and align
Fixture the part and align it to the drawing’s datums.
- 04
Run the program
Run the part program, or measure features with the joystick where needed.
- 05
Read the report
Check results against tolerances and question any reading that looks wrong.
- 06
Save and flag
Save and print reports in the plant’s format and flag failures at once.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Bridge CMM with touch probe
- Measures points on a part with micron-level accuracy.
- Reference sphere
- Calibrates probe styli before measuring.
- Styli and extensions
- Reach features of different sizes and depths.
- CMM fixtures and clamps
- Hold parts still without distorting them.
- Measuring software and reports
- Calculate features and compare them with the drawing.
- Height gauge and surface plate
- For quick checks alongside the CMM.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Avoid probe crashesMove slowly with the joystick near the part, and run new programs at reduced speed.
- Heavy parts on graniteLift heavy parts with the hoist and set them down gently on the table.
- Clean hands, clean tableKeep the granite and parts free of oil, chips and fingerprints.
CMM operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Cleans and fixtures parts and runs existing programs under guidance.
- L2Skilled
Qualifies probes, aligns parts and runs programs reliably through the shift.
- L3Proficient
Edits programs, measures new features manually and reads GD&T results correctly.
- L4Expert
Writes programs for new parts and supports first-article and approval reports.
- L5Master
A CMM operator plants trust with their most complex measurements, with a long #1305 record.
How your level rises
#1305 CMM Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
