What conformal coating operator work involves
01What the work is
Boards that go into vehicles, outdoor equipment, chargers and industrial controls are often protected with a thin conformal coating, an acrylic, silicone, urethane or similar layer that keeps out moisture, dust and chemicals. Before coating, connectors, test points and anything that must stay bare are masked with tape, boots or liquid mask. The coating is then sprayed by hand or machine, brushed, or applied by dipping, cured by air, heat or UV, and inspected under UV light, because most coatings glow so that gaps and bubbles show. Screen printing on boards covers stencil printing of solder paste, solder mask and the white legend text, where squeegee pressure, speed and stencil cleaning decide the result.
02A shift, start to finish
A coating shift starts with the work instruction and the masking drawing for the board. You mask each board, load it on the conveyor or into the spray booth, check the coating’s viscosity or the machine’s programme, and run a first board for inspection. Through the shift you keep the booth and nozzles clean, check thickness where the plant measures it, de-mask carefully after curing so the coating does not tear, and inspect every board under UV for gaps, bubbles, runs and coating where it should not be. Touch-up is done with a brush to the instruction, and every board is logged.
