What printing machine operator work involves
01What the work is
Industrial printing is mostly packaging: the carton a product sits in, the label on a bottle, the printed film of a snack pouch. Sheet-fed offset presses print cartons and labels from plates, transferring ink through a rubber blanket with a careful balance of ink and fountain solution. Flexo presses print labels, corrugated board and films from flexible plates with fast-drying inks; gravure prints long film runs from engraved cylinders. After printing come varnish or lamination, die-cutting, and folding and gluing for cartons. The operator, called the machineman in many presses, owns the quality of what comes off the delivery end.
02A shift, start to finish
Most of a printing shift’s skill is in the makeready. You mount and register the plates, set ink keys and the ink-water balance, set pressure, and pull sheets until colours match the customer proof under the viewing booth and the register marks sit on top of each other. Then the run: pulling sheets at intervals, watching for colour drift, hickeys, misregister, set-off and scumming, and adjusting before a whole stack is wasted. Between jobs you wash rollers and blankets. Every job’s counts, waste and any colour changes go on the job ticket.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
Add #1019 in My Skills and it starts at L1. Plants can list it on a shift with a minimum level, for example asking for a higher level for brand-colour work, where matching the proof exactly matters. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1019 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.

How your level rises
#1019 Printing Machine Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
