What spray painting and powder coating work involves
01What the work is
Industrial paint shops coat everything from machine guards and electrical panels to two-wheeler parts and steel furniture. Parts are first cleaned, usually through a pretreatment line of degreasing, rinsing and phosphating or a similar conversion coat, then dried. Liquid painting uses conventional, HVLP, airless or electrostatic spray guns in a booth with filtered extraction, and the paint is mixed with thinner and hardener to the viscosity on the data sheet. Powder coating sprays a dry, charged powder that clings to the earthed part and then flows and cures in an oven. Either way, the finish has to meet a film thickness, gloss and adhesion standard.
02A shift, start to finish
On a paint shop shift you start by checking the booth: filters, extraction, gun cleanliness and earthing, and the conveyor hooks or jigs. Parts are inspected for oil, rust or weld spatter, then masked where paint must not go, such as threads and earthing points. You spray in steady passes for even coverage on edges and corners, watch the oven temperature and line speed, and check cured parts with a dry film thickness gauge, a cross-cut adhesion test and a look under good light for orange peel, runs, pinholes, dust inclusions and thin edges. Guns, hoses and the booth are cleaned before the shift ends.
