What shot blasting, deburring and fettling work involves
01What the work is
Castings leave the foundry with gates, risers, fins along the parting line and burnt-on sand, and forgings come out with scale. Fettling is the old foundry word for cleaning them up: breaking off feeders, then grinding the stubs and flash flush with pedestal, swing-frame or hand grinders and chipping hammers. Shot blasting cleans the surface by throwing steel shot at it in a tumble, hanger or table machine, leaving an even matt finish ready for machining or painting. On machined parts, deburring means removing the sharp burrs that cutting leaves on edges, cross-holes and threads, by hand tools, brushes or vibratory finishing.
02A shift, start to finish
A finishing shift is steady, physical and noisy. You check the grinding wheels for cracks and the right speed rating, test the blast machine’s door interlocks and shot level, and put on the respirator, face shield and ear protection before the first part. Then it is batch after batch: grind gate stubs to the profile, load the blaster and set the cycle, deburr edges and holes to the sample, and look over every part for cracks, cold shuts or blow holes the grinding uncovers. Good parts go on to machining or painting, doubtful ones are tagged for the inspector, and the dust collector and shot level are checked again before hand-over.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
Add #1011 in My Skills and it starts at L1. Plants can list it on a shift with a minimum level, perhaps lower for blasting and deburring and higher for heavy fettling with large grinders. Approved #1011 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings make up the record SuperGig uses to raise your level.

How your level rises
#1011 Shot Blasting / Deburring / Fettling starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
