What SMT machine operator work involves
01What the work is
An SMT line builds the dense side of a modern circuit board. A loader feeds bare boards to a stencil printer that prints solder paste onto the pads; solder paste inspection checks the print; pick-and-place machines take tiny parts from reels on feeders and place them on the paste at high speed; a reflow oven melts the paste into joints; and AOI cameras check every part and joint. The SMT operator keeps that line fed and running: loading reels on the right feeders in the right slots, splicing new reels on before old ones run out, verifying part numbers by scanning, clearing machine stops such as pick errors, handling solder paste correctly, and checking first articles and AOI calls. People search for this as an SMT operator, pick and place operator or SMT line operator job.
02A shift, start to finish
A typical SMT shift includes a changeover. Before it, you prepare the feeder kit for the next product from the feeder list, then load and verify every reel against its slot with the scanner, because one reel in the wrong slot can put the wrong part on every board. The printer gets its stencil and fresh paste, warmed to room temperature and mixed as the plant’s rules say, and the first board is checked part by part before the line runs. Through the shift you watch for low reels and splice in time, clear stops, keep the paste log and the moisture-sensitive part log, and review AOI calls with the inspector.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1607 sits in Assembly & Production Line and is mapped to NCO-2015 8212.1603 Pick and Place Assembly Operator, at NSQF level 4; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification Pick and Place Assembly Operator (NSQF 4) is written at about L4 Expert. It starts at L1 when you add it, with no licence gate, and rises with the SMT shifts plants approve. Hand-fitted parts on the same boards are #1602 Electronics / PCB Assembly work.

Load and verify reels
Load each reel on its feeder and slot, and scan it against the feeder list.
- 02
Splice on time
Splice new reels on before the old ones run out, so the line never stops for parts.
- 03
Paste and printer
Fit stencils, add paste handled the way the rules say, and watch print and SPI results.
- 04
Clear machine stops
Clear pick errors, feeder faults and nozzle problems safely and quickly.
- 05
First article and AOI
Check the first board part by part, and review AOI calls with the inspector.
- 06
Keep the logs
Record paste use, moisture-sensitive part exposure and each changeover.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Feeders and feeder carts
- Hold the part reels and present parts to the placement head.
- Splicing tool and splice tape
- Join a new reel to the running one.
- Barcode scanner
- Verifies each reel against its feeder slot.
- Stencil and squeegees
- Print solder paste onto the pads.
- Solder paste mixer and fridge log
- Keep paste in the right condition and record its use.
- SPI and AOI stations
- Check the paste print and the finished joints.
- Reflow oven
- Melts the paste into joints by a set temperature profile.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Covers and interlocksKeep machine covers closed, and open one only with the machine stopped, the way the plant’s rules say.
- Reflow heatOven exits and fresh boards are hot: use gloves and let boards cool.
- Solder pastePaste contains metal and flux: wear gloves and wash your hands before eating.
- ESDGround yourself before handling reels and boards; #2017 ESD Handling Certified is a certificate SuperGig verifies.
SMT machine operator levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Loads and unloads boards, fetches reels and watches the line, with an operator showing each machine.
- L2Skilled
Loads, verifies and splices reels and clears simple stops, with a senior checking changeovers.
- L3Proficient
Runs the line alone on familiar products and checks first articles and AOI calls.
- L4Expert
Leads changeovers, makes printer and placement adjustments within the plant’s procedure and guides others; the NSQF qualification Pick and Place Assembly Operator (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other SMT operators, checks their setups and helps the line cut stops and defects.
How your level rises
#1607 SMT Machine Operator starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for SMT machine operator work
Licences and certificates
- #2017 ESD Handling CertifiedSuperGig verifies
- #2018 Cleanroom Protocol CertifiedSuperGig verifies
#1607 has no licence gate and starts at L1 when you add it. If an SMT shift lists #2017 ESD Handling Certified or #2018 Cleanroom Protocol Certified, you need that certificate verified by SuperGig before it counts: add it, tap “Ask SuperGig to verify” and keep the original ready.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
