The work

What utility and chiller technician work involves

01What the work is

Utilities are the services every machine relies on. Compressed air drives cylinders, tools and blow-offs, so compressors, receivers, dryers and drains must keep pressure steady and the air dry. Chillers cool moulds, hydraulic oil, process water and air-conditioning, and cooling towers throw that heat away outdoors, with pumps, strainers and water treatment in between. Many plants also count pumps, water softeners and standby generators among their utilities. A utility technician runs this equipment through the shift, keeps the logbook, carries out routine maintenance, and spots the change in a reading that warns of a failure before it stops production. People search for it as a utility operator, compressor operator or chiller operator job.

02A shift, start to finish

A utility shift runs on rounds. Every hour or two you walk the utility area and log pressures, temperatures, oil levels, motor currents and running hours, check the dryer’s dew point indicator, test the auto-drains and listen for anything new. Planned tasks fill the gaps: cleaning compressor intake filters and chiller strainers, topping up or changing oil on schedule, checking cooling tower water and its dosing pumps, and changing over duty and standby machines on the plant’s rota. When a chiller trips on high pressure or the air pressure starts to fall, you find out why, whether that is a fouled condenser, a stuck drain or a leak on the line, and act before production feels it.

03Your skill in SuperGig Partner

In the app, #1503 sits in Maintenance & Mechanical and is mapped to NCO-2015 3132.0700 Air Compressor Operator, at NSQF level 3; NCO-2015 lists the chiller plant attendant as a neighbouring code, 3132.0900. In the app’s skill standard, the NSQF utility maintenance assistant qualification written for pharma and medical-device facilities (NSQF 3) sits at about L3 Proficient. The skill has no licence gate, so it starts at L1 when you add it; running a boiler is different and has its own licence-gated skill.

On the shift

What you do on utility and chiller technician shifts

The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.

  1. 01

    Hourly log rounds

Log pressures, temperatures, oil levels, currents and running hours at the times the plant sets.

  2. 02

    Compressed air

Run compressors and dryers, test the auto-drains and keep the line pressure steady.

  3. 03

    Chillers

Watch chiller pressures and temperatures, clean strainers and respond to trips.

  4. 04

    Cooling towers and water

Check fans, water level, blowdown and dosing, and keep the basins clean.

  5. 05

    Duty and standby

Change over duty and standby machines on the plant’s rota, and after a fault.

  6. 06

    Hunt air leaks

Find leaks on the air network and tag them for repair; a leak wastes energy every hour it runs.

Machines, instruments and tools

Logbook or round checklist
The readings and checks for each machine, round by round.
Pressure and temperature gauges
Fixed on the equipment; you read them and spot any drift.
Clamp meter
Checks motor currents on compressors, pumps and fans.
Ultrasonic leak detector
Finds compressed air leaks you cannot hear over the noise.
TDS and pH meter
Checks cooling tower and process water quality.
Filter wrench and grease gun
For routine filter changes and lubrication.
Infrared thermometer

Safety and PPE

Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.

  • Depressurise firstIsolate and bleed air or water pressure before you open a filter housing, a drain or a line.
  • Respect compressed airNever point an air hose at anyone, or use it to blow dust off clothes or skin.
  • Water chemicalsDosing chemicals burn skin and eyes: wear goggles and gloves whenever you handle them.
  • Noise and heatCompressor rooms are loud and hot: wear ear protection and keep belt and fan guards on.
Skill #1503 · Levels

Utility and chiller technician levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master

Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.

  1. L1Starter

Does the log rounds with the utility in-charge and learns the normal readings of each machine.

  2. L2Skilled

Runs start and stop sequences and routine filter, drain and oil tasks, with a senior checking.

  3. L3Proficient

Runs the utility area alone for a shift and catches abnormal readings early; the NSQF utility maintenance assistant qualification (NSQF 3) is written at about this level.

  4. L4Expert

Troubleshoots compressor, dryer and chiller trips, plans duty and standby changes and guides helpers.

  5. L5Master

Guides, mentors and trains other utility technicians, checks their logs and helps the plant cut waste such as air leaks.

How your level rises

#1503 Utility / Compressor & Chiller Technician starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:

  • Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
  • Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
  • How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.

The app shows what your next level needs.

The skill check on a shift

A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.

A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

Asked to pay for a shift?

Don’t pay. SuperGig never charges Partners to join or to get a shift.

Tell us
What does a utility technician do in a factory?
Runs and looks after the services the machines need: compressed air, chilled water, cooling water and pumps, and often standby generators. Most of the shift is rounds and readings, with routine maintenance in between and a fast response when a machine trips or a reading drifts.
Is #1503 the same as a boiler operator?
No. Boilers have their own skill, #1020 Boiler Operator, which counts from L1 only once SuperGig has verified a #2003 Boiler Operator Licence, because boiler operation is licensed in law. #1503 covers compressors, dryers, chillers, cooling towers and pumps and has no licence gate. Some utility shifts list both skills.
What is the difference between #1503 and an HVAC technician?
#1503 runs the plant’s central utilities, the compressor house and the chiller plant, mostly through rounds, logs and routine maintenance. #1506 HVAC / Refrigeration Technician repairs air-conditioning and refrigeration systems: refrigerant circuits, gas charging, AHUs and cold rooms. Chillers sit between the two, so plants sometimes list both skills on one shift.
Are there full-time, night or weekend utility shifts?
Yes, when plants post them. Compressors and chillers run whenever production runs, so a plant on three shifts needs utility rounds at night and on Sundays too. In the app you can book weekly repeats or a multi-day run, and set Night and your weekend days in My Availability. See night shift jobs, weekend shift jobs and full-time shift work.
How do I get utility work near Dabaspet with SuperGig?
Pre-register on this page. Our corridor team will reach you for further onboarding. In the SuperGig Partner app, complete KYC with Aadhaar and PAN, add #1503 and any utility skills you hold, and set a travel distance in My Availability that covers Dabaspet and Nelamangala on the same highway. Utility shifts near you then show on the Find Shifts map with their pay, skills and gate, ready to book.
Do I need ITI training for utility shifts?
The app does not ask for a certificate for #1503; it starts at L1 when you add it. Plants want people who can read gauges, follow start and stop sequences and spot a change early, and ITI training in a mechanical or electrical trade helps with all three. Your level then rises from the utility shifts plants approve.
