An HT / LT switchgear technician runs and maintains a plant’s substation and main panels: HT breakers, transformers, LT switchboards, capacitor banks, and the switching, readings and shutdown maintenance around them. In SuperGig Partner this is skill #1406 HT / LT Switchgear Technician: it opens at L1 once SuperGig has verified your #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence, and then you book the switchgear shifts plants in Hosur and Bengaluru post, with the pay shown first.

What HT and LT switchgear technician work involves
01What the work is
Larger plants take power from the grid at high tension, often 11 kV or more, and step it down through their own transformers to the 415-volt LT supply that runs the machines. Between the two sit the HT panel with its vacuum circuit breakers and protection relays, the transformers, and the LT side: the main PCC with its air circuit breakers, the MCC panels and MCCB feeders, the bus ducts, and the APFC panel whose capacitor banks keep the power factor up. An HT / LT switchgear technician runs and maintains all of it: switching under the plant’s permit system, taking the readings, keeping breakers, transformers and panels healthy, and restoring supply quickly and safely after a trip.
02A shift, start to finish
A substation shift starts with the handover and the logbook: voltage, current, power factor, energy and maximum demand at set times, transformer oil and winding temperatures, the oil level and the colour of the breather’s silica gel, and the state of the DC battery that trips the breakers. Then the planned work: cleaning and tightening LT panel connections, servicing an ACB mechanism, testing insulation with a high-voltage insulation tester, replacing a failed capacitor in the APFC panel. When a feeder must be worked on, you follow the switching programme: open, rack out, isolate, prove dead and earth, and the permit is issued only once the line is clear and the earths are on. Restoring supply follows the same steps in reverse.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1406 sits in Electrical & Instrumentation and is mapped to NCO-2015 3113.0200 Electrical Technician (High Voltage), at NSQF level 4; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification Technician: Distribution Transformer Operation and Maintenance (NSQF 4) is written at about L4 Expert. Because this is licensed electrical work, #1406 counts from L1 only once SuperGig has verified your #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence, and on the day the plant’s own permit to work still governs every HT job. From L1 your level rises only from switchgear shifts plants approve. LT installation work without the substation side is #1401 Electrician.
What you do on HT and LT switchgear technician shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Substation readings
Log voltages, currents, power factor, energy and maximum demand at the times the plant sets.
- 02
Switching under permit
Open, rack out, isolate, prove dead and earth a feeder by the switching programme before any work starts.
- 03
Transformer checks
Watch oil and winding temperatures, oil level, breather silica gel and any sign of oil leaks.
- 04
Breaker maintenance
Clean, lubricate and operate-test ACBs and VCBs, and check their racking and interlocks.
- 05
APFC and DC battery
Check the capacitor banks and contactors in the APFC panel, and the battery bank that trips the breakers.
- 06
Insulation and earth tests
Test cable, breaker and transformer insulation, and the earth system, during shutdowns.
Machines, instruments and tools
- High-voltage insulation tester
- Tests HT cables, breakers and transformer windings at the voltages they need.
- HT discharge and earthing rods
- Discharge and earth a dead HT conductor before anyone touches it.
- HT gloves, insulating mat and arc-rated clothing
- Personal protection rated for the voltage and the panel you work on.
- Breaker racking handle and operating tools
- Rack ACBs and VCBs in and out, and charge their springs by hand.
- Earth resistance tester
- Checks the substation earth pits and earth grid.
- Clamp meter and power analyser
- Read load currents and power factor on LT feeders.
- Thermal camera or IR thermometer
- Finds hot joints in panels and bus ducts while they carry load.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Licence and permit, bothHT work needs your verified licence and the plant’s permit to work: never start without both.
- Prove dead, then earthTest for voltage with a proven tester and fit earths before you touch any HT conductor.
- Arc flashWear arc-rated protection for racking and switching, and stand to the side of the panel door.
- In an emergencyIsolate before you reach a person who has taken a shock; on a live shift, the app’s SOS button calls 112 first.
HT and LT switchgear technician levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Opens once SuperGig has verified the #2004 licence: substation readings, the logbook and LT panel cleaning under a senior technician.
- L2Skilled
Carries out routine LT switching and breaker checks within the plant’s permit system, with a senior checking.
- L3Proficient
Handles LT faults and maintenance alone and assists on HT switching under the plant’s permit.
- L4Expert
Carries out HT switching and shutdown maintenance on VCBs, transformers and LT boards and guides helpers; the NSQF qualification Technician: Distribution Transformer Operation and Maintenance (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other switchgear technicians, checks switching programmes and leads shutdown work with the plant’s engineer.
How your level rises
Your #1406 HT / LT Switchgear Technician skill starts at L1 once SuperGig has verified your #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for HT and LT switchgear technician work
Licences and certificates
L1 waits for a verified #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor LicenceAdd the licence in the app, tap “Ask SuperGig to verify” and keep the original ready: SuperGig support will call you and check it against your verified Aadhaar. Only SuperGig can verify a licence or certificate.
- #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
- #2009 First-Aid CertifiedSuperGig verifies
#1406 counts from L1 only after SuperGig has verified your #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence, and on site the plant’s own permit to work still applies to every HT job. Substation shifts can also list #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified or #2009 First-Aid Certified.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
