What maintenance electrician work involves
01What the work is
An industrial electrician looks after the electrical side of the machines that make the product. On an injection moulding machine that means heater bands, thermocouples and the controllers that hold each zone at temperature; on a power press, the main motor, the clutch-brake valve and the two-hand safety controls; on a conveyor, the geared motor, its starter and the sensors that count parts. Most of the skill is fault finding: reading the control drawing, checking the 24-volt control supply, the interlocks and the overload relay, and working out whether the fault is in the panel, the field wiring or the machine itself. Searches for a maintenance electrician job, a breakdown electrician or a shift electrician all lead to this one skill, #1402.
02A shift, start to finish
A shift usually starts at the breakdown register, with whatever the last shift left open, then moves to the preventive checks on the plan: tightening terminals, cleaning panel fan filters, comparing motor current with the nameplate using a clamp meter, and testing a motor’s insulation when it has been running hot. Then the calls come: a conveyor motor tripping on overload, a heater zone that will not reach temperature, a drive showing a fault code. You isolate, lock and test before you open anything, find the cause rather than just resetting, fix it, test it with the operator watching, and log the downtime and the cause. When the fault turns out to be mechanical, such as a seized bearing, you hand over to the fitter and say exactly what you found.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1402 sits in Electrical & Instrumentation and is mapped to NCO-2015 7411.0100 Electrician, General, at NSQF level 4; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification Industrial Electrician (NSQF 4) is written at about L4 Expert. Like #1401 Electrician, it waits for a licence: the skill counts from L1 only once SuperGig has verified your #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence. A plant posting a breakdown shift lists the skills it needs with one minimum level, and only Partners with every listed skill at that level can book; your #1402 level then rises from the maintenance shifts plants approve, and only SuperGig raises it.
What you do on maintenance electrician shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Breakdown fault finding
Work from the control drawing: supply, interlocks and overloads first, then field devices, until the real cause shows.
- 02
Motors and starters
Check DOL and star-delta starters, contactors and overload relays, and replace what has failed.
- 03
Drives and heaters
Read drive fault codes, check heater bands and thermocouples, and restore the settings the plant has on record.
- 04
Preventive checks
Tighten terminals, clean panel filters, and log motor currents and insulation readings on the PM plan.
- 05
Sensors and limit switches
Clean, realign or replace the proximity sensors and limit switches that hold up a machine cycle.
- 06
Log the downtime
Record when the machine stopped, what failed, what you replaced and how you tested it.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Clamp meter
- Reads motor running current against the nameplate without breaking the circuit.
- Insulation tester
- Tests motor windings and cables after a trip, a wash-down or a long idle spell.
- Multimeter rated CAT III or higher
- Control voltages, continuity and sensor signals inside safe measuring limits.
- Phase sequence indicator
- Confirms rotation before a reconnected three-phase motor is run.
- Infrared thermometer
- Spots hot terminals, contactors and motor bearings on PM rounds.
- Control drawings and machine manuals
- The circuit, the terminal numbers and the drive parameters you restore after a repair.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Lock out, then testIsolate, lock, tag and prove dead before you open a panel or a motor terminal box.
- Drives stay chargedA drive keeps a charge after the supply is off: wait the time on its label and measure before you touch it.
- Never bypass a safety deviceDo not jumper an interlock, a guard switch or a safety relay to get a machine running again.
- Face and handsUse a face shield and gloves rated for the voltage whenever you must measure inside a live panel.
Maintenance electrician levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Opens once SuperGig has verified the #2004 licence: PM checks, terminal tightening and spares beside the shift electrician.
- L2Skilled
Clears routine breakdowns such as a failed contactor, a tripped overload with a known cause or a damaged sensor cable, with a senior checking.
- L3Proficient
Takes breakdown calls alone on familiar machines, reads the control drawing and finds the cause instead of resetting and hoping.
- L4Expert
Handles the hard faults, intermittent trips, drive and heater problems, and guides the helpers on the shift; the NSQF qualification Industrial Electrician (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other maintenance electricians, checks their repairs and helps the plant stop repeat breakdowns.
How your level rises
Your #1402 Industrial / Maintenance Electrician skill starts at L1 once SuperGig has verified your #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
