A PLC and automation technician keeps automated machines and lines running: PLCs, HMIs, sensors, valves, servo drives and the safety circuits around them, finding the input or output that has stopped a station and putting it right. In SuperGig Partner this is skill #1403 PLC / Automation Technician: add it in My Skills, where it starts at L1, and book the automation shifts plants in Hosur and Bengaluru post, each showing the level it needs and its pay before you book.

What PLC and automation technician work involves
01What the work is
An automation technician works where electrics meet logic. A PLC reads inputs from sensors, push buttons and safety devices, runs its program, and drives outputs such as solenoid valves, motor contactors and servo drives; the HMI shows the operator what is happening and raises the alarms. When a line stops, the question is usually which input is not made or which output is not firing, and why. The work covers going online to watch the program run, checking I/O status, replacing and setting sensors, restoring drive parameters, and making small program changes only when the plant approves them. People search for PLC programmer jobs, automation engineer jobs or controls technician jobs; on plant shifts the work is mostly fault finding and keeping existing systems running, not writing new programs from scratch.
02A shift, start to finish
A shift often begins at the HMI alarm history: which stations stopped overnight, and why. A typical call is a station waiting for a part-present signal: the program shows the step it is stuck on, the input is off, and the cause is a photoelectric sensor knocked out of line or a cable cut inside a drag chain. Other jobs are a servo axis that has lost its home position, a pneumatic valve that sticks, or a recipe that must be set for the next product. Before you change anything you back up the program, and when you finish you record what changed, who approved it and how you tested it, including the e-stops, door switches and light curtains you touched.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1403 sits in Electrical & Instrumentation and is mapped to NCO-2015 7412.0101 Automation Specialist, at NSQF level 4; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification PLC Technician (Metal Sector) (NSQF 4) is written at about L4 Expert. It does not wait for a licence. It starts at L1 when you add it, whatever your years in automation, and rises only from your own record of approved shifts in the skill. That is the honest picture of a senior skill in the app: a plant that lists #1403 at a higher level opens the shift only to Partners whose record already shows that level, and SuperGig promises no particular role, rank or amount of work. Robot cells have their own skill, #1407 Robotics / Cobot Technician.
What you do on PLC and automation technician shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Read the alarms
Start from the HMI alarm list and the step the sequence is stuck on.
- 02
Go online, carefully
Watch the program run on the plant’s programming laptop to find the input or output holding the line.
- 03
Sensors and I/O
Check, align or replace proximity, photoelectric and pressure switches, and the I/O modules behind them.
- 04
Drives and servos
Recover a lost home position, read drive faults and reload the parameters on record.
- 05
Prove the safety circuit
Test e-stops, door switches and light curtains after every job that touched them.
- 06
Back up and record
Back up before a change, and record what changed, who approved it and how you tested it.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Laptop with the PLC programming software
- Goes online to watch the logic, read I/O status and take program backups.
- Programming and network cables
- Connect to the PLC, the HMI and the drives on the machine’s ports.
- Multimeter
- Checks 24-volt DC supplies, sensor signals and 4-20 mA loops at the terminals.
- HMI alarm history
- Shows the step, the alarm and the time a station stopped.
- Electrical drawings and the I/O list
- Tell you which terminal, card and tag each sensor and valve uses.
- Spare sensors and valve coils
- The parts that fail most often, matched to the machine.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- No forcing to get byNever force outputs or bridge a safety input to restart a line; find the cause instead.
- Lock out before you reach inIsolate electrical and pneumatic energy before you enter a cell or put a hand into a station.
- Changes need approvalMake program changes only with the plant’s approval and a fresh backup in hand.
- Expect movementAxes, cylinders and conveyors can move the moment a fault clears: stand clear before you reset.
PLC and automation technician levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Supports the automation engineer: reads HMI alarms, checks sensor lights and I/O status, and fetches the right spares.
- L2Skilled
Replaces and sets sensors, valve coils and I/O cards on familiar machines, with a senior checking before the restart.
- L3Proficient
Goes online alone to find the input or output holding a station, fixes the cause and records it.
- L4Expert
Takes on non-routine faults in drives, servos and safety circuits, and program changes the plant approves, and guides others; the NSQF qualification PLC Technician (Metal Sector) (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other technicians, reviews their changes and records, and helps the plant keep programs and backups in order.
How your level rises
#1403 PLC / Automation Technician starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for PLC and automation technician work
Licences and certificates
- #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
#1403 has no licence gate in the app: it starts at L1 when you add it. A shift can still list #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified for work inside machines, or #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence when the job includes wiring on the plant’s installation.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
