What panel wireman work involves
01What the work is
A panel wireman turns a schematic into a working panel. The job starts with a mounting plate, DIN rails and wire ducts cut to length, then the components: MCBs, contactors, relays, power supplies, terminal blocks, a PLC with its I/O cards, a drive or two. Every wire is cut to length, stripped, marked with its ferrule number, finished with a bootlace ferrule or a lug, routed through the ducts and terminated where the drawing says, in the colour the drawing asks for. Power panels add copper busbars that are cut, bent, drilled and torqued. A neat panel is easy to trace and to maintain long after it leaves the shop, so the routing matters as much as the connections. People search for this as a panel wiring job, control panel wireman or panel builder.
02A shift, start to finish
On a panel shift you start with the drawing set, the bill of materials and the components kitted for your panel. You check the parts against the BOM, lay out and fix the hardware, then wire circuit by circuit, ticking off each wire on a printed copy of the schematic as you go. When the wiring is done you run a point-to-point continuity check, tighten every terminal to its torque, and mark any change in red on the drawing so the as-built record is right. The panel then goes to testing, where the test engineer powers it up, never the wireman alone.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1405 sits in Electrical & Instrumentation and is mapped to NCO-2015 7411.0301 Wireman, Light and Power, at NSQF level 3; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification Wireman Control Panel Electronics (NSQF 3) is written at about L3 Proficient. Unlike #1401, #1402 and #1406, it does not wait for a licence in the app, so it starts at L1 when you add it and rises with the panel wiring shifts plants approve. Panels often go on to the plant’s automation team, which is where #1403 PLC / Automation Technician comes in.
What you do on panel wireman shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Read the drawings
Work from the GA drawing, the schematic and the terminal plan, and check every part against the BOM.
- 02
Mount the hardware
Cut and fix DIN rails and wire ducts, then mount breakers, contactors, relays and terminals.
- 03
Wire, ferrule and crimp
Cut, strip, mark and crimp each wire, and route it neatly through the ducts.
- 04
Busbars and power wiring
Cut, bend and drill copper busbars and torque the power connections, when the panel has them.
- 05
Point-to-point check
Test every connection for continuity against the schematic before the panel leaves your bench.
- 06
Mark the as-built
Mark every change on the drawing so the panel and its papers match.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Wire stripper and cutter
- Strip insulation cleanly without nicking the copper strands.
- Bootlace ferrule crimper
- Finishes stranded wire ends for screw and spring terminals.
- Lug crimping tool, hand or hydraulic
- Crimps ring and pin lugs on power cables with the right die.
- Ferrule and wire-marker printer
- Prints the wire numbers the schematic gives each conductor.
- DIN rail and duct cutter
- Cuts rails and wire ducts square and to length.
- Torque screwdriver
- Tightens terminals to the value on the component or the drawing.
- Continuity tester or multimeter
- Point-to-point checks of every wire against the schematic.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Testing is not your switchKeep your hands clear while the test engineer powers a panel, and never energise one yourself.
- Cutters and edgesRail and duct cutters, cut metal and busbar edges are sharp: deburr them and keep the guards on.
- Keep the panel cleanCollect copper strands and offcuts as you work; one loose strand inside a panel can cause a short.
- Hands and wristsHours of stripping and crimping strain the wrist: use the right tool for each size and rest between panels.
Panel wireman levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Cuts ducts and rails, strips and ferrules wires and kits components for a senior wireman.
- L2Skilled
Wires simple control circuits to the schematic, with a senior checking the routing and terminations.
- L3Proficient
Wires a complete control panel alone from the drawings and passes the point-to-point check; the NSQF qualification Wireman Control Panel Electronics (NSQF 3) is written at about this level.
- L4Expert
Wires power and control panels with busbars, PLCs and drives, finds wiring errors at testing and guides helpers.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other wiremen, checks panels before they go to testing and keeps the shop’s wiring standard.
How your level rises
#1405 Panel Wireman starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for panel wireman work
Licences and certificates
- #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
#1405 starts at L1 when you add it: in the app it does not wait for a licence. When a shift moves from panel building to installation work on the plant’s supply, it can also list #2004 Electrical Wireman / Supervisor Licence, which counts only once SuperGig verifies it; panel testing and retrofits can list #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
