What HVAC and refrigeration technician work involves
01What the work is
Plants cool and condition air for people, processes and products. Offices and control rooms use split and ductable units or VRF systems; production halls use air handling units fed by chillers; electronics and pharma areas need cleanrooms with steady temperature, humidity and pressure; food plants depend on cold rooms and freezers. An HVAC and refrigeration technician maintains and repairs all of it: filters, coils, fans and belts, the electrical controls, and the refrigerant circuit of compressor, condenser, expansion device and evaporator. The trade work includes finding leaks, brazing copper pipe, pressure-testing with nitrogen, evacuating with a vacuum pump and charging refrigerant to the maker’s values. People search for it as an AC technician, AC mechanic or refrigeration mechanic job.
02A shift, start to finish
A typical shift starts with the PM list: clean or change AHU filters, wash condenser coils, check fan belts and bearings, and take readings of supply and return air, suction and discharge pressures and compressor current. Then the calls: a cold room alarm because an evaporator has iced up, a unit that blows warm air, a cleanroom that has lost its pressure difference. You find the cause, which may be a failed defrost heater, a dead capacitor, a blocked filter or a refrigerant leak, fix it and log the readings. Refrigerant is recovered, never vented, and every brazing job is done under the plant’s hot work rules.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1506 sits in Maintenance & Mechanical and is mapped to NCO-2015 3115.1100 Heating, Ventilation and Refrigeration Engineering Technician, at NSQF level 4; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Technician (NSQF 4) is written at about L4 Expert. It starts at L1 when you add it, with no licence gate, and rises from the HVAC shifts plants approve for you. SuperGig shifts are posted by plants, so this is HVAC work at plants, not home AC service calls; the central chiller plant and compressor house are #1503 Utility / Compressor & Chiller Technician work.
What you do on HVAC and refrigeration technician shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
AHU and filter care
Clean or change filters, check fans, belts and dampers, and keep the drains clear.
- 02
Take the readings
Read pressures, temperatures and currents with gauges and a clamp meter, and compare them with normal.
- 03
Cold rooms and freezers
Find out why a cold room is warm: iced coils, defrost faults, door seals or a gas leak.
- 04
Find refrigerant leaks
Pressure-test with nitrogen and find leaks with a detector or soap solution.
- 05
Braze, evacuate and charge
Braze copper joints, pull a deep vacuum and charge refrigerant to the maker’s values.
- 06
Log every job
Record readings, gas used and parts changed for each unit.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Refrigerant manifold gauge set
- Reads suction and discharge pressures and charges refrigerant.
- Vacuum pump and micron gauge
- Evacuates a circuit before charging and proves it is dry and tight.
- Electronic leak detector
- Finds refrigerant leaks on joints and coils.
- Refrigerant recovery machine
- Recovers refrigerant instead of venting it.
- Brazing kit
- Joins copper pipe, under the plant’s hot work permit.
- Pipe cutter, flaring and swaging tools
- Prepare copper pipe for joints.
- Clamp meter and thermometer
- Compressor current and air temperatures.
- Anemometer and hygrometer
- Air flow, temperature and humidity in rooms and ducts.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Refrigerant burnsLiquid refrigerant causes cold burns: wear gloves and goggles when you connect hoses.
- Brazing is hot workBraze only under the plant’s hot work permit, with an extinguisher at hand; #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified is a certificate SuperGig verifies.
- Rooftop unitsRoof and high-wall units need edge protection or a harness; #2006 Work-at-Height Certified is a certificate SuperGig verifies.
- Isolate the unitSwitch off and lock out before you open a panel; capacitors can stay charged.
HVAC and refrigeration technician levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Cleans filters and coils, carries tools and takes readings for a senior technician.
- L2Skilled
Does routine PM and changes parts such as fan motors, capacitors and contactors, with a senior checking the unit.
- L3Proficient
Diagnoses common refrigeration and air-conditioning faults alone with gauges and a clamp meter.
- L4Expert
Finds and fixes leaks, brazes, evacuates and recharges circuits, handles chillers and cleanroom AHUs, and guides helpers; the NSQF qualification HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Technician (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other technicians, checks their work and logs, and helps the plant keep its cooling reliable.
How your level rises
#1506 HVAC / Refrigeration Technician starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
