What brazing operator work involves
01What the work is
Brazing sits between welding and soldering. The parts are heated but not melted, and a filler, such as a silver alloy, brass or copper-phosphorus, melts and is drawn into the narrow gap between them by capillary action, making a strong, sealed joint. Flux keeps the surfaces clean while they heat, except with copper-phosphorus fillers on copper, which flux themselves. It is how air-conditioner and refrigerator coils and their copper pipework are joined, how carbide tips are fixed to cutting tools, and how many electrical, auto and hydraulic fittings are assembled. Induction and furnace brazing do the same job in high volume with repeatable heat.
02A shift, start to finish
On a brazing shift, joint preparation decides the result: tube ends are cut square, deburred and cleaned, fittings assembled with the right clearance, and flux applied where it is needed. You set the torch flame or the induction settings, heat the parts evenly so the whole joint reaches temperature, then feed the filler and watch it run all the way around. Copper tubes are purged with nitrogen inside during brazing so no scale forms to block the system later. After cooling, flux residue is washed off, the joint is checked for a complete fillet, and tube assemblies go for pressure or leak testing. Rejects are logged with the reason.
