A TIG welder joins metal with a non-melting tungsten electrode under argon, adding filler rod by hand, for the clean, precise welds needed on stainless steel, aluminium, thin sheet and pipe root runs. In SuperGig Partner this is skill #1203: add it after KYC and book the TIG welding shifts plants and fabrication shops in Hosur and Bengaluru post, with the pay shown before you book.

What TIG welder work involves
01What the work is
TIG, or tungsten inert gas welding, is the slow, controlled process welders use when the weld must be neat and sound. The arc burns from a sharpened tungsten electrode in a shield of argon; the welder controls heat with a foot pedal or torch switch and feeds filler rod with the other hand. It is the process for stainless steel tanks, pipes and food, dairy and pharma equipment, for aluminium on alternating current, for thin sheet that MIG would burn through, and for the root pass of pipe joints that are then filled with other processes. On stainless pipe, the inside is purged with argon so the root does not oxidise.
02A shift, start to finish
A TIG shift starts with preparation, because TIG punishes dirt. Joints are cleaned with a stainless wire brush or solvent, tungsten is ground to a point lengthways, gas flow is checked, and the amperage and AC or DC mode set for the metal and thickness. Pipe joints get their purge dams and argon flow. You tack, weld with a steady arc length and rhythm, and check each weld: full penetration at the root, even ripples, no undercut, and on stainless a light straw colour rather than the dark blue or grey that shows overheating. Tungsten that touches the pool is reground before you carry on.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1203 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post TIG shifts with a minimum level, perhaps higher for pipe and pressure work. Approved #1203 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings build the record SuperGig uses to raise your level.
What you do on TIG welder shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Clean the joint
Clean with a stainless wire brush or solvent: TIG welds show every trace of dirt.
- 02
Grind the tungsten
Grind the tungsten to a point lengthways and set its stick-out.
- 03
Set current and mode
Set amperage and AC or DC for the metal and thickness.
- 04
Purge pipe joints
Fit purge dams and argon so the inside of stainless pipe stays clean.
- 05
Weld with filler
Hold a steady arc length and add filler rod evenly for a smooth bead.
- 06
Check root and colour
Check penetration, profile and, on stainless, the heat tint colour.
Machines, instruments and tools
- TIG inverter (AC/DC)
- DC for steel and stainless, AC for aluminium.
- TIG torch and tungsten electrodes
- Carry the arc; tungsten is ground to suit the job.
- Argon cylinder and flowmeter
- Supply the shielding gas.
- Purge equipment
- Dams, tape and a second argon line for pipe roots.
- Filler rods
- Matched to the base metal, such as stainless or aluminium grades.
- Tungsten grinder and stainless brushes
- Keep electrodes sharp and joints clean.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Strong UVTIG arcs give off strong UV: cover your skin and use the right helmet shade.
- Stainless fumesFumes from stainless steel are harmful: weld with extraction.
- High-frequency startKeep cables and torch insulation undamaged; HF start can give a shock.
- Argon in tight spacesArgon pushes out air: ventilate tanks and pits before you enter them.
TIG welder levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Welds simple stainless or steel joints in the flat position with clean preparation.
- L2Skilled
Welds thin sheet and fittings with neat beads and correct heat colour.
- L3Proficient
Welds aluminium and positional joints and makes sound pipe root runs with purging.
- L4Expert
Takes on pressure and hygienic piping work and fixes others’ weld problems.
- L5Master
A TIG welder plants trust with their most critical stainless and aluminium work, with a long #1203 record.
How your level rises
#1203 TIG Welder starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for TIG welder work
Licences and certificates
- #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
No licence is needed to add #1203. Pipe and pressure work often needs a welder qualification test set by the plant or project, and #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified counts once SuperGig has verified it.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
