What quality systems and internal auditor work involves
01What the work is
A quality management system is the set of procedures, records and habits that makes a plant deliver good parts every time: how drawings are controlled, how operators are trained, how instruments are calibrated, how control plans and failure-mode analyses are kept up to date, how complaints are investigated. Internal audits test whether all of this is really happening. A system audit follows the clauses of ISO 9001 or IATF 16949; a process audit follows one process from input to output; a product audit re-inspects finished parts; layered process audits are short, frequent checks by people at every level. Findings become non-conformities that the area owner must correct and prevent.
02A shift, start to finish
An audit shift starts with the audit plan and checklist, built from the standard, the procedures and recent problems. On the floor and in offices you ask people to show you how they work, and you look at the evidence: training records, calibration labels, the latest drawing revision at the machine, control plan checks done at the stated frequency, the corrective action file for last month’s complaint. You record what you saw objectively, good and bad, write each non-conformity against the requirement it breaks, agree it with the area owner, and later verify the corrective actions, often in an 8D or CAPA format. The report goes to the quality manager.
