An NDT, non-destructive testing, technician finds cracks, porosity and other hidden flaws in welds, castings and forgings without damaging them, using visual, dye penetrant, magnetic particle and ultrasonic tests, and reports them against the acceptance criteria. What NDT technician work involves
01What the work is
Non-destructive testing checks parts that must not fail, such as pressure vessel and structural welds, crankshafts, axles and safety-critical castings, while leaving them fit for use. Visual testing comes first. Dye penetrant testing draws a coloured or fluorescent liquid into surface cracks and shows them with a developer. Magnetic particle testing magnetises steel and dusts or sprays it with particles that gather at cracks near the surface. Ultrasonic testing sends sound into the part and reads echoes from internal flaws and thickness. Radiography images welds with X-rays or gamma rays and is done only by radiographers licensed under India’s atomic energy regulations.
02A shift, start to finish
An NDT shift follows a written procedure for each method and part. You check the surface is clean and suitable, calibrate the equipment, for example the ultrasonic flaw detector on reference blocks and the magnetic yoke’s lifting power, and then test, scan or inspect systematically so nothing is missed. Indications are evaluated against the acceptance criteria in the code or specification the plant works to: some are acceptable, some are rejected. Rejected areas are marked on the part and every test is recorded in a report with the method, settings, results and the technician’s name. Consumables and probes are checked and stored before you leave.

Make sure the test area is clean and suitable for the method.

Judge each indication against the acceptance criteria of the code or specification.

Mark rejected areas clearly on the part for repair.

The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
