What heat treatment operator work involves
01What the work is
Gears, shafts, pins, bearings and fasteners get their strength and wear resistance in the heat treatment shop. Hardening heats steel above its critical temperature and quenches it in oil, water or polymer; tempering reheats it to a lower temperature to take away brittleness. Case carburising and carbonitriding add carbon or nitrogen to the surface in a controlled furnace atmosphere so gears get a hard skin over a tough core. Induction hardening heats only the surface of a part with a coil, in seconds. Annealing and normalising soften or refine steel before machining. Each part number has a cycle, and the operator runs it exactly.
02A shift, start to finish
A heat treatment shift is about recipes and records. You load parts onto trays or fixtures in the pattern the work instruction shows so heat and quench reach every part, pick the recipe for that part number, and start the cycle. While it runs you watch temperature, time and atmosphere readings, quench oil temperature and agitation, and alarms. After quench and wash, parts go through tempering, and samples are tested for hardness on a Rockwell or Vickers tester; case depth is checked by the lab. Every batch card is filled in so the load can be traced later, and parts that miss the hardness band are held, never mixed with good ones.
