The work

What electronics test and repair technician work involves

01What the work is

In an electronics plant every board is tested before it ships. Automated optical inspection looks for missing or misplaced parts, in-circuit testers (ICT) check each component and connection, and functional testers (FCT) power the board up and check it does its job. Boards that fail come to the repair bench, often called the debug or rework station. A test and repair technician reads the fail report, uses the schematic and the bill of materials to narrow the fault, measures with a multimeter and an oscilloscope, finds the cause, such as a solder bridge, an open joint, a reversed diode or a dead IC, reworks it and sends the board back to test. Recurring faults go back to the line, because the same defect fifty times is a process problem, not a repair problem.

02A shift, start to finish

A shift on the repair bench starts with the queue of failed boards, each with its tag and fail log. You sort them by fault, check the obvious under magnification first, then power the stubborn ones on a current-limited supply and probe the rails, clocks and signals. Rework is done with a temperature-controlled iron or a hot-air station, with the right flux and the board on an ESD-safe mat; fine-pitch and BGA parts need more skill and the right equipment. Each repaired board goes back through the test it failed, and you log the defect code, the location and the part you replaced, so the plant can see where its yield is going.

03Your skill in SuperGig Partner

#1408 sits in Electrical & Instrumentation and is mapped to NCO-2015 7422.2201 Test and Repair Technician, at NSQF level 4; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) Technician (NSQF 4) is written at about L4 Expert. It starts at L1 when you add it, with no licence gate, and rises from your record of approved repair shifts. Electronics shifts often also list #2017 ESD Handling Certified, a certificate that counts only once SuperGig has verified it, and close skills such as #1605 Soldering Operator.

On the shift

What you do on electronics test and repair technician shifts

The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.

  1. 01

    Read the fail log

Start from the tester’s fail report and the board’s tag, then check the obvious under magnification.

  2. 02

    Probe and measure

Check rails, clocks and signals with a multimeter and an oscilloscope against the schematic.

  3. 03

    Rework the fault

Remove and replace parts, clear bridges and reflow joints with an iron or hot air.

  4. 04

    Retest every repair

Send each repaired board back through the test it failed before it moves on.

  5. 05

    Log the defects

Record the defect code, the location and the part, so repeat faults stand out.

  6. 06

    Feed back to the line

Tell the line leader or engineer when the same defect keeps arriving.

Machines, instruments and tools

Digital multimeter
Resistance, diode, continuity and voltage checks on boards.
Oscilloscope
Shows clocks, ripple and signals that a multimeter cannot.
Current-limited bench power supply
Powers a suspect board without letting a short burn it.
Hot-air rework station
Removes and refits surface-mount parts.
Temperature-controlled soldering station
Precise joints and touch-up without lifting pads.
Stereo microscope or magnifier
Finds bridges, cracks and misaligned parts.
LCR meter
Checks capacitors, inductors and resistors off the board.
ESD bench, wrist strap and mat
Protect sensitive parts while you handle and repair them.

Safety and PPE

Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.

  • ESD every timeWear the wrist strap, check it at the tester, and keep boards on ESD-safe surfaces.
  • Mains-powered unitsPower supplies and chargers carry mains voltage and stored charge: use an isolation transformer and discharge capacitors first.
  • FumesKeep the fume extractor on while you solder or use hot air.
  • Hot toolsPark irons in their stands and let hot-air nozzles cool before you change them.
Skill #1408 · Levels

Electronics test and repair technician levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master

Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.

  1. L1Starter

Checks boards under magnification, sorts the repair queue and makes simple through-hole part changes under supervision.

  2. L2Skilled

Reworks common defects from the fail log, such as bridges and missing parts, with a senior checking the results.

  3. L3Proficient

Diagnoses faults on familiar boards alone with a multimeter, an oscilloscope and the schematic.

  4. L4Expert

Handles non-routine faults and fine-pitch rework and feeds defect trends back to the line; the NSQF qualification Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) Technician (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.

  5. L5Master

Guides, mentors and trains other repair technicians, checks their rework and helps the plant raise its first-pass yield.

How your level rises

#1408 Electronics Test & Repair Technician starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:

  • Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
  • Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
  • How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.

The app shows what your next level needs.

The skill check on a shift

A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.

A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.

Asked to pay for a shift?

Don’t pay. SuperGig never charges Partners to join or to get a shift.

Tell us
What are ICT and FCT?
They are the two main electrical tests in electronics manufacturing. ICT, the in-circuit test, presses a bed of probes onto the board and checks each component and connection. FCT, the functional test, powers the board and checks it works as the finished product should. A board that fails either one comes to the #1408 repair bench.
Do I need to read schematics for #1408 shifts?
Yes, at least well enough to follow a power rail or a signal from one part to the next. The fail log points you to an area of the board; the schematic and the bill of materials tell you what should be there and what each part does. Reworking known defects comes first; diagnosing from the schematic is what L3 and above look like.
Is electronics repair a good skill for a diploma holder?
It suits people with an electronics diploma or ITI, because the work is measuring and reasoning more than routine assembly. In the app the skill starts at L1 for everyone, and your level rises from the #1408 shifts plants approve. See ITI and diploma jobs for other skills that fit that training.
Are there full-time, night or weekend electronics repair shifts?
When plants post them. Electronics lines often run more than one shift and the repair bench follows the line, so evening and night repair shifts are common where a line runs late. A plant can post weekly repeats or a multi-day run of up to 31 days, booked in one go. See full-time shift work, night shift jobs and weekend shift jobs.
How do I get electronics repair work near Electronic City with SuperGig?
Pre-register on this page. Our corridor team will reach you for further onboarding. Then, in the SuperGig Partner app, complete KYC with Aadhaar and PAN, add #1408 and #2017 ESD Handling Certified, and ask SuperGig to verify the certificate. Set My Availability to reach Electronic City, Bommasandra or Whitefield, and repair shifts near you show on the Find Shifts map with their pay, skills and the plant’s gate.
What is the difference between #1408 and an end-of-line test operator?
An #1610 End-of-Line Test Operator runs the final tests on finished products and records each pass or fail. A #1408 technician takes the failures and finds out why: measuring, diagnosing, reworking and retesting. Many plants need both on the same shift.
