What sewing machine operator work involves
01What the work is
Garment factories run as lines. The cutting room sends bundles of cut panels, and each operator on the line does one or two operations before passing the bundle on: a single needle lockstitch operator may attach pockets or set collars, an overlock operator joins and neatens seams, a flatlock operator does covers and hems on knitwear, and special machines make buttonholes, sew buttons and add bartacks. Each operation has a standard time, often called SMV, and the line has an hourly target. Quality is set by the specification: stitches per inch, seam allowance, no puckering, no skipped or broken stitches, and measurements that match the size chart.
02A shift, start to finish
A stitching shift starts with your machine: needle size and point, thread type and colour, tension, and a test seam on a scrap. Bundles come with a ticket; you check the pieces match in size and shade, stitch the operation, cut threads and pass the bundle on, keeping the line moving at the target. Checkers at the end of the line return defects for repair, so you fix your own work quickly. Many plants keep a needle log: a broken needle is reported and every piece of it accounted for. At the end of the shift you clean lint from the machine, oil it if the plant asks, and log your output.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
Add #1015 in My Skills and it starts at L1. Plants can list #1015 on a shift with a minimum level, for example a higher level for collar or sleeve setting, which takes more skill than straight seams. SuperGig raises your level from approved #1015 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings.

How your level rises
#1015 Sewing Machine Operator (Garment) starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
