What EV battery and BMS technician work involves
01What the work is
An EV battery pack is many lithium-ion cells grouped into modules, wired to a battery management system (BMS), and closed in an enclosure with fuses, contactors, sensors and a connector to the vehicle. The BMS measures every cell group’s voltage and the pack’s temperatures and current, balances the cells, protects the pack from over-charge, deep discharge and heat, and talks to the vehicle and the charger, often over CAN. A battery and BMS technician works on packs that failed in testing or came back from the field: reading the BMS fault history, measuring cell voltages and insulation, finding a failed sense wire, connector, module or BMS board, repairing it to the plant’s procedure and testing the pack again. People search for this as EV technician, battery technician or BMS technician work.
02A shift, start to finish
A shift in a battery repair or test bay starts with the queue of packs and a look at the quarantine area. Each pack gets a visual check first, for swelling, damage, water ingress or burn marks; anything doubtful stays in quarantine and is never charged. Packs that pass are connected to the diagnostic laptop to read faults and cell data, then measured: pack voltage, each cell group’s voltage, insulation between the pack and its enclosure, and the temperature sensor values. A repair may be a new sense harness, a module swap, a BMS board change or a firmware load by procedure, followed by a charge and discharge test and a full record against the pack’s serial number.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1409 sits in Electrical & Instrumentation and is mapped to NCO-2015 8212.0300 Battery Repairer, at NSQF level 4; in the app’s skill standard, the NSQF qualification Battery System Repair Technician (NSQF 4) is written at about L4 Expert. It starts at L1 when you add it, with no licence gate, and climbs only from the battery shifts plants approve for you. Building new packs on a line is a different skill, #1606 EV Battery Pack Assembly, and a plant can list both on one shift.
What you do on EV battery and BMS technician shifts
The usual tasks of the trade. Every shift in SuperGig Partner has its own job description with the duties, so you know the work before you book.
- 01
Inspect and quarantine
Check each pack for swelling, damage, water and heat marks, and quarantine anything doubtful.
- 02
Read the BMS
Connect the diagnostic tool, read fault codes and cell data, and save the log.
- 03
Measure the pack
Check pack and cell-group voltages, insulation resistance and the temperature sensors.
- 04
Repair to procedure
Replace sense harnesses, connectors, modules or BMS boards in the order the plant’s procedure sets.
- 05
Charge and discharge test
Run the pack through the cycler test and confirm it balances and holds capacity.
- 06
Record and label
Record faults, parts and test results against the pack’s serial number.
Machines, instruments and tools
- Insulated tools rated to 1000 V
- Spanners, screwdrivers and sockets for working near live cells.
- CAT III multimeter
- Pack, module and cell-group voltage checks.
- Insulation resistance tester
- Checks the pack is isolated from its enclosure.
- CAN interface and diagnostic laptop
- Reads BMS faults and cell data, and loads firmware by procedure.
- Battery cycler
- Charges and discharges a repaired pack to test capacity and balance.
- Thermal camera or IR thermometer
- Spots hot cells, joints and connectors under load.
- Fire blanket and the battery fire kit
- Kept at the bay in case a cell overheats.
Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- A pack is never offCells hold their charge whatever the switches say: use insulated tools and gloves, and take off rings and watches.
- Thermal runawayA swollen, damaged or hot pack goes to quarantine; never charge it or open it outside the plant’s procedure.
- Disconnect and lock outRemove the service disconnect, lock it and prove the pack terminals isolated before you open a pack.
- Protect the electronicsBMS boards are static-sensitive: wear your wrist strap and work on ESD-safe surfaces.
EV battery and BMS technician levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master
Plants book by skill number and level. Add the numbered skills you can do; each one climbs from L1 to L5 as plants approve your shifts in it.
- L1Starter
Handles, labels and visually checks packs and modules and keeps the quarantine area in order, under a senior technician.
- L2Skilled
Runs routine checks to procedure, such as cell-group voltages, insulation tests and connector inspection, with a senior reviewing.
- L3Proficient
Reads BMS faults and replaces harnesses, modules and BMS boards on familiar packs alone.
- L4Expert
Diagnoses non-routine faults, runs capacity and balance tests and guides others; the NSQF qualification Battery System Repair Technician (NSQF 4) is written at about this level.
- L5Master
Guides, mentors and trains other battery technicians, checks their repairs and records, and keeps the bay’s battery safety practice sharp.
How your level rises
#1409 EV Battery / BMS Technician starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
Licences and standards for EV battery and BMS technician work
Licences and certificates
- #2017 ESD Handling CertifiedSuperGig verifies
- #2008 Hot Work / LOTO CertifiedSuperGig verifies
#1409 starts at L1 when you add it, with no licence gate. Battery bays often list #2017 ESD Handling Certified because BMS boards are static-sensitive, and #2008 Hot Work / LOTO Certified for isolating packs before they are opened.
Skills marked “SuperGig verifies” count only once SuperGig has verified them.
