What spot and resistance welder work involves
01What the work is
Resistance welding needs no filler or gas: the resistance of the sheets to a large current heats a small spot until it fuses, while the electrodes squeeze the parts together. It is the main joining process for car and two-wheeler bodies, the body in white, as well as appliance cabinets, seat frames and electrical enclosures. Pedestal machines weld parts brought to them; suspended guns on balancers are taken to large panels in fixtures. Projection welders fuse weld nuts and studs onto sheet at raised points, and seam welders use rolling wheels to make leak-tight seams on tanks. Settings of current, squeeze, weld and hold time are set for each joint.
02A shift, start to finish
On a spot welding shift you check the electrode tips first: they mushroom as they wear, which spreads the current and weakens welds, so they are dressed with a tip dresser or replaced on schedule. Parts are loaded into the fixture with the clamps set, and spots are made in the sequence and positions the work instruction marks, with the electrodes square to the sheet. You watch for expulsion, burnt or cracked spots, missing or misplaced welds, and distortion. Plants check weld strength with peel or chisel tests on sample parts at set times, so welding settings are never changed without the setter.
03Your skill in SuperGig Partner
#1208 starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Plants can post spot welding shifts with a minimum level, for example higher for body panels in fixtures than for pedestal work on small brackets. Approved #1208 shifts, verified on-time arrivals and plant ratings build your record, and SuperGig raises the level from it.

- Projection welder
- Welds nuts and studs onto sheet at raised points.
- Seam welder
- Makes continuous, leak-tight seams with rolling wheels.
- Tip dresser
- Restores the electrode tip shape.
- Peel and chisel test tools

Safety and PPE
Every plant sets its own safety rules. A shift can list what to bring or wear and the hard parts of the work, so read it before you book.
- Expulsion sparksMolten metal can spit from a spot: wear a face shield or safety glasses.
- Pinch between electrodesKeep fingers away from the electrodes and fixture clamps as they close.
- Heavy gunsUse the balancer for suspended guns; never hold a gun’s full weight.
- Strong magnetic fieldsHigh welding currents create strong fields: tell the supervisor if you have a pacemaker or implant.
Spot and resistance welder levels, L1 Starter to L5 Master

Runs a fixture through the shift with correct spot patterns and tip care.
- L3Proficient
Handles suspended guns on body panels and spots weak welds before they leave the station.
- L4Expert
Runs projection and seam welders as well and supports the setter with strength tests.
- L5Master
A spot welder plants trust on any station in the body shop, with a long #1208 record.
How your level rises
#1208 Spot / Resistance Welder starts at L1 when you add it in My Skills. Each skill climbs from L1 to L5. Only SuperGig sets a level, from your record, never the app. Three things move it up:
- Approved shifts in the skillShifts a plant approved that listed this skill when it was posted.
- Arriving on timeAn arrival SuperGig verified, such as the WorkPass check at the gate.
- How plants rate your workIt counts once a plant has rated you. Before that it never holds you back.
The app shows what your next level needs.
The skill check on a shift
A plant can list skills on a shift with one minimum level for all of them, from L1 to L5. You need every listed skill at that level, and SuperGig checks yours before the booking is accepted.
A shift with no skills listed has no skill check: any KYC-verified Partner can book it.
